Basically the hogs of the water.

One of these had 10 babies inside her.

They sure are fun to hunt. Got a friend with a bad problem that we are trying to solve one 22lr at a time.

Yep, good stuff. We made stew with one of them but always looking for new ways to cook the.

When my kids were little, nutrias would come up to the bank while we were feeding ducks at the park in Boerne. My girls would go tell there mom about feeding the monster rats. My wife has still never seen one and doesn't have any idea what we were talking about.
I have never seen them another other place, but I know some have an abundance of them.

I had a couple of buddies in SE Texas years ago who used to trap them for the fur. Never tried eating them. I think they are, as you indicated, basically the aquatic version of hogs as regards the environment.

They will come out of the water close to you. They walk funny with those short front legs.
I guess I need to get another night vision for my 22
