Any of the rifles mentioned would do. I'd go with the Weatherby Vanguard but that's just a personal preference.

Pick them up, see which ones feel best for you.

Go for the Remmy 700 as most are just simply fine rifles. Most sub $700 rifles don't stay that way. There are more add-ons, whistles, and bells for the Remmy than most of the others to satisfy your future desires.

in my mind its a tie for the a bolt 2 and weatherby. one has more function and the other more luxury. never been a rummy fan.. and i don't have much experience in the tikka

Of all you listed, Tikka has the best trigger and accuracy as good or better than all of them. Most of guys who build guns on here will look for the Tikka action. Only weakness would be the stock.

Have you looked at and handled a Tikka? It's very cheap looking. The Vanguard S2 is quality all over -- better than a Remington 700, and in my experience, more accurate. And I would dispute that the Tikka is more accurate than the Vanguard.

The one that never gets mentioned...the Model 70. I think that with a synthetic stock it can be had for under 700. Its got the right stuff.

I'd get a Tikka in 7mm-08.

Many years ago I knew some folks who bought cars based on Consumer Reports recommendations. They ended up with excellent cars that they hated. Use this kind of information to eliminate bad choices, not to select your best choice. You have to see and handle these rifles to discover which ones fit you. You will know the right one when you've got it in your hands.

Do not buy a rifle because of the recommendations of others. Make up your own mind.

+1 on the Winchester model 70. - It really is a cut above the others if you can find one for less than 700 bills.

If I had a 700 dollar bill burning a hole in my pocket, I'd look for the best deal on a Weatherby Vanguard 2.

Click the "Make an offer" button at Bud's, to save even more. I tried this one time and got the scope I wanted for 50 bucks less than it could be had for, anywhere else.

I would go to a gun store or big Chain like Cabela's and handle a few rifles. See how you like the action (work it) and how it shoulders, the length of pull, the trigger, etc. I think all the brands that have been mentioned are good rifles and will be accurate enough to accomplish what you want. I am NOT a long range shooter so for me a gun that has a nice action, fits me well and has a good trigger that can be adjusted and shoots well out to say 400 yards is what I look for.

Right now all my bolt action rifles are Remington 700's and most have synthetic stocks. But that's my preference. Right now my favorite rifle is a left handed Remington 700 Mountain rifle in .270 caliber with a Kevlar stock from Remington's Custom shop that I bought used years ago. It's light, handles well and the accuracy is far better than my shooting ability.

So my advice..decide on a caliber and go handle a few rifles and do not overlook the option of buying a used rifle that has been well cared for.

Weatherby VG2 is sub moa guaranteed, and the two position triggers break right at 3 lbs, some a little less.
Tikka is sub moa and have nice triggers.

New Remington's don't hold a candle to the pre Freedom Group models. The new owners are only worried about volume sales.
ABolt and XBolt Ok guns but they all need a trigger job out of the box. And they are not guaranteed Sub moa.

I have/had at least one of each of the rifles discussed. My OPINION is...

Remington 700- Pre-Freedom Group rifles are solid. I have 2 left, both in .30-06. Replace the Walker trigger with a Timney, work up a good handload and you have a winner.

Weatherby Vanguard- I had the S1. Good rifles, accurate but a bit heavy in sporter configuration. I really didn't care for the factory trigger. I can't speak about the S2.

Winchester Model 70- I have the Super Grade FN mfg. CRF. Love this rifle! Excellent out of the box trigger. Handles great but is also heavy. VERY accurate and looks senational.

Browning X Bolt- One of my favorites, I have the White Gold Medallion. Light, awesome detachable magazine, handles like a dream, great out of the box trigger and I haven't found a factory load it doesn't like. VERY accurate. Love the looks too. So far I wouldn't change a thing.

Tikka T3 Lite- I have a couple of these, one for me (.30-06) and one for my wife (7mm-08). VERY ACCURATE rifles. I do NOT like the factory synthetic stocks on them and have replaced both with B&C Hunter stocks. To me, it's the best upgrade for these rifles. Other than that, nothing else is needed. Awesome triggers out of the box. Handling and weight are about perfect for me. EXCELLENT VALUE.

Go handle them all before making a decision.

bought a tikka today... handled all mentioned and looked at a couple that weren't. now its just a matter of figuring out what ammo it likes lol.
