This is my opinion which is not worth much, just ask my wife! Guys post age/score? Everyday. I love this, it is a way too share your deer, and converse over the sport we all love! There are people I know who do not care about these post, I see this as do all of you. I think most guys want to kill mature deer, and big horns, whether its the right way to look at hunting or not. I am one of those people, and it doesnt matter about meat hunting, i eat those big deer just like I would a doe or small buck( they may be a little tough, but I have good teeth). That being said, I saw someone on their post, said "I kill the deer I can afford". That is a true statement for sure, you must be excited about the deer you hunt in your area, or you must move. I get caught up in looking at monsters on here and find myself being more selective in my harvest. That is ok, but at the end of the day, when that deer walks out and I get that feeling( that we all know) I reach for the rifle and dont look back! So bring on the age/score, or opinion on this deer questions, the more deer I get to see the happier I am. As for the guys who poke fun of these questions, just remember, they probably dont need opinions, they just want them!

up Well said. I still get that feeling even when a doe walks out. IF that feeling ever leaves, might as well quit hunting.

Amen ZK, if I ever develop cardiac issues, might start bird watching instead! Yes Nav practice is right, ever since Stx showed me the way to quick score on the hoof, its fun to do and amazingly fast, easy, and darn sure accurate with practice.

Agree. If you don't like the topic don't click the thread. And, if you don't like seeing deer pics this may not be the best site for you.

Forums is all about sharing, learning and growing as hunters , I love too see all the deer pictures and judging those deer, now if those realtree guys will start posting the scores in them videos like they used too.

I hunt with one rule when it comes to which bucks I shoot.

If you like him, shoot him.

I posted a pic just last week asking the age of a deer, but it was more curiosity than anything. I'm not going to get bogged down with having to analyze every deer I see to determine if I'm going to shoot him. I'm basically the only hunter on my 100 acres, and I rarely hear shots around me. Nothing I do is going to either hurt the population, or on the flip side, grow bigger deer. So if I like him, and he gets me pumped up, I'll shoot him

Yea Texican, I wish I could remember exactly the way he explained it, but This was the basis. You kinda have to know the deer you hunt ( body size, the region makes a difference) every deer gets a base score - width+mass+main beam length thats where knowing the deer you hunt is handy. The deer I hunt will usually be around 80 down south maybe reach 90 or 95. Then you just do a quick tally on tines. Its sounded like it would be difficult, but after practicing it for while on dead deer and pics on the forum it became easier. I am sure other guys do things different, but this has worked for me. I usually will be close as I need to be when it comes to that moment. Thats prob clear as mud, but hope it helps

I completely agree with you on this. I enjoy just looking at as many deer as possible and the the estimates on their age. I feel it will help me make better decisions in the field in the spur of the moment choice whether mature or not. Mature being different depending on the region of Texas you are from. It is as much of the reason I put cameras out as any other.
