I have never owned a 4-wheel drive but i'm about to,i'm looking at a 1980 jeep wrangler that's pretty nice for $6000.00 OR a 1993 toyota tacoma 4x4 for $4000.00,Now my question is,Which is going to be the most durable and best to drive around and to drive to my deer stand. just asking some advise from ya'll that use 4-wheel drive's,I want to go to my stand warm and dry and come home warm and dry,I hope i'm giving my age away grin,And believe me ,I'm not hard on my toy's texas

Thanks For Any Advise up

I would go with the tacoma for sure. Much more reliable and nicer to drive.

If you buy the Jeep will you tell me where the Tacoma is?

That's a tough one. I love my Jeep. It's very reliable but it's also a 1993 with fuel injection, unlike the 1980 you are looking at. The Tacoma you're looking at has fuel injection, is also very reliable, little more useful than a Jeep, just not as much fun. Because of the reliability of the Tacoma over that Jeep, I'd pick the Tacoma.

The Tacoma will ride better and have similar if off road ability. You can make the Toyota just as off road capable though. In general Toyota is a 20x better value and reliability then jeep

Jeep will be worth what you pay for it or more in a few years. The yota just depends....

Owning both, if you are just looking for a deer lease type vehicle, both will do what you want to do. BUT, I would go with Tacoma. I have a 95 ext cap 4x4 V6 and it goes everywhere i need it to go. Tacoma's hold their value very well over time just like a Jeep does so to me that part is a wash. On the Tacoma, just look at the frame and make sure it's not rusted that much, it was a problem on some of them, mine looks perfect so i'm not sure which ones. The old Tacomas are pretty easy to work on. I've done all my own stuff except the rear main seal. I'm about to "re-paint" it but it will be bedliner on the whole thing!!!

from my buddy with a Jeep "Just empty every pocket"

I ran an 87 4 runner with the top removed for 6 years, paid 1500, sold for 1500
Never left us stranded and never got stuck.

I bought a 95 4Runner this year for 4k and unfortunately it had some issues that needed to get fixed and I threw more money at it than I wanted to but I think it is going to be awesome.

My vote, Toyota. How many jeeps do you see running all over Africa and the middle east desert?

X2 on that;
If I would have to summarize it: Jeep is excellent for off road, but nothing else… it is outdated (by design), almost no suitable to be used on road (definitely uncomfortable) and definitely unreliable, Toyota (Tacoma in your case) is good to excellent in all aspects … and absolutely lightning years ahead of Jeep from reliability stand point.

I don't get the unreliable thing. I've got 225k miles on a jeep wrangler and still runs strong on the original motor and drivetrain

Sure some of them go a long time, but MOST don't. History proves the toyota is much more reliable than a jeep. Most toyotas will go a few hundred thousand miles, most jeeps will not even come close to that. Just because one person has a yugo with a million miles does not make a yugo a reliable car.

I STRONGLY disagree with most of you. Some Jeep may be underpowered but mechanical reliability is not typically an issue. If you really think a Tacoma has the same or better resale than a Jeep I'm not going to change your mind but your wrong.

You need to scan craigslist and see how many Jeeps have over 150k or 200k miles. Mine has 178k and ours like a kitten. Surprisingly everything works on it and has no rust. Older Jeeps are very reliable

Agreed. wink

But, that's kind of the point. With the Toyota (same mileage and proper care), it would not be 'surprising' at all. Expected...if any thing.

You better hope that ruber timing belt in the Tacoma has been changed to a chain, if not it is a ticking time bomb waiting to destroy the motor. I've had both vehicles, and each one had their quirks, and each one had their strong points.

Of the 2 you are looking at I would go with the Tacoma, as I mentioned above, simply becasue of the fuel injection. The 80's model Jeeps are not the best, a 1991 and up Wrangler is what I would be shopping forif you wanted a Jeep. They have strong leaf springs and stronger frames, galvanized frames so rusting isnt an issue, fuel injection, and a more powerful 6cyl.
