I have this guy coming pretty regularly, along with some other young bucks, but he looks a little older than a 1.5 yo, what say you all, do you think he should be shot or left to grow another season?

Agree that that's a yearling, but he's AR legal.

^^^^^^ Spot on. Classic 1.5 year old Buck. Looks like a Doe...only with antlers= Young Buck.

Other clues: Head looks long, nose tapered, rear end not blocked, neck skinny, no brisket or blending of neck into chest, round eyes.

Good call.

I think it's 2.5 partially because I don't think the brisket is as tight as you would see on a yearling. But then again I may let him go another year, as tall as he is as a spike he could turn into something

I'd let him walk.

Let him walk and hopefully he makes it until next year.. Compare his growth to this year..If hes not growing larger horns due to genetics.. "SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND" and take him out.. You don't want him breeding your does.

He's a 3-point, not a spike, and not legal in AR counties.

I'm not too good at aging, but he looks older than a 1.5 YO to me.

He is legal in AR counties. Read the regs. He would walk anywhere I hunt since he has a branch so not a true spike in my book.

Only one unbranched antler is required to make a spike legal. For example, a deer with a spike on one side and four points on the other is a legal buck. Also, unbranched is defined as no points an inch or longer coming off the main beam.

The buck in the rear is an 18-month old deer with good potential. The spike is at least a year older and is ready for the ice chest.

I don't think that is his first set of antlers.

Based on the current wildlife regulations, a spike is:

A "spike buck deer" is a buck with no antler having more than one point. All other deer are antlerless deer. A spike buck must be tagged with a buck deer tag from the hunter's hunting license or applicable permit..

However, the Special Antler restrictions are a little different. It says:

Antler restrictions apply only in certain counties (see County Listings). In these counties, the bag limit is two legal bucks, but only ONE may have an inside spread of 13 inches or greater. In these counties, a legal buck deer is defined as having:

* a hardened antler protruding through the skin AND;
* at least one unbranched antler; OR
* an inside spread measurement between main beams of 13 inches or greater (does not apply to a buck
that has an unbranched antler).

Based on the regs, the deer is NOT as spike, but can be shot as a "legal" buck in Antler Restriction counties. Personal choice is always yours as long as it is within the law.

Actually, you were sorta right. By rule, he isn't a spike, but he is a legal buck in counties with AR.

I suspect most hunters won't split hairs and will just call it a spike, rather than a legal buck.

That deer is no yearling. I'd say he's 2 1/2 and needs to go. I noticed the little buck under the feeder also has only one browtine, also on the left side but pretty sure he's a yearling. I'm no expert but I've been at this whitetail game 47 years in a row. I'd bet money that 3 pt. is 2 1/2.

I always "thought" you could shoot in AR county. But you would have to use your buck tag, because of that extra point. what's yall interpretation please don't quote the book, I can't understand it.

In an AR county you can shoot 2 bucks, but only one over 13". If he qualifies for the unbranched antler you can still shoot one over 13''. You have two buck tags in an AR county.
