I feed PP performance for all my dogs. Love it. And I also mix in PP canned food when it's cold outside after a hunt.

Both of my dogs were getting sick on Pro Plan. For one of the other Purina dog foods Beniful there was a class action lawsuit earlier this year related to one or more ingredients in it killing several dogs. We switched to Merrick and the problems with my dogs went away. The fact that both dogs young and old had the same problems and both went away with the food change, tells me it was likely the food causing it. But then Purina bought Merrick, I was told the ingredients or sourcing of ingredients would be changed, so we got away from that one too. And right now purina is in trouble over some canned food brands. I know most people have no problems with Pro Plan, but Purina has lost my trust.

Purina has the largest research center in the world. I've never in my 50 years fed anything other than one type of Purina dog food. Both of my dogs have been on regular Purina Dog Chow for over three years. They both have firm stools, and good bottom.

This kinda mystifies me too. All my dogs my whole long life have been raised on plain old Purina Dog Chow. Puppies were started on a 50/50 mix with Purina Puppy Chow. I still feed the same dog chow to our pack and they are thriving. The dogs always live long happy lives.

I might have to make that switch purina dog chow is half the price of pro plan for a bigger bag.

My best guess it it is the sourcing of ingredients from other countries. Which would mostly be china. And not testing of those ingredients or a lack of test for a toxin. For example I don't think there is a way to test for ricin in dog food. That would explain why a food for years would have no problem then suddenly change. Or why a region such as California could have more dog deaths from a food. There are two lawsuits I saw on Purina. One for California, one national. Blue buffalo went through a mess in recent years for ingredient and sourcing of those ingredients, but not changing their advertising claims. There was a lawsuit on them both class action and ironically from Purina. Blue Buffalo paid a hefty settlement. There also is no test for Jatropha which is what was believed to be in the jerky treats that may have been killing dogs. It could all be a coincidence about my dogs and others that had problems on it and if there was a problem, maybe Nestle adjusted the formula change that caused the problems. Maybe it was regional problems with the storage of ingredients or product causing toxins much like aflotoxins in contaminated corn that will make animals sick over time, or maybe they started looking closer at the money saving changes they made with the source of it's ingredients and stopped buying it from those problem sources.
But all I know with all the recent bad publicity, I just have too much invested in my dogs to trust their products right now.

My wife bought Purina Little Bites for Muffin. I was running low of Muffin's dog food. I put two bowls out. Muffin preferred the Dog Chow. Now all I buy is Dog Chow. It's changed over the years. A lot less fiber.

I would bet 95% of field trial pros in the retriever field trial world feed pro plan.

Pro Plan is the only food my dog has ever not been picky with. He loves it.
He's literally gone 2-3 days without eating the two times I tried others (Victor at home and something the trainer had). Just picks at the bowl and leaves it.

Tonight he ate the Dog Chow like it was Pro Plan.

Glad to see Dr. Tims under the 5 Star rating. Besides it being a very healthy food all the ingredients are made right here in America.

The owner puts his phone number and email address on the website. I emailed him and got a quick response. I was told he will also speak with you directly if you call him. That is pretty rare these days.

Glad to see what i feed is not on list. Means it will stay low price and good.

I have never seen any of the 5 star listed foods sold any where. On the 4 star list is Diamond food. Weren't they linked to several dogs dying from it a few years ago? Nutro is also on the 4 star list and we feed our beagle that but my lab had less than firm stool on it so we changed to the Iams. The Iams is on the 3 star list but I couldn't find anything really negative in it except the corn meal is the number two ingredient. The rest of the list is considered positive and it is recommended. You could spend a week going through that list to find a great food you have access to and can afford.

I feed Victor green bag 26/18 and pro plan is my second choice. Not much difference in price and no difference in bottom. More stool waste with pro plan so I give Victor the nod.

I feed 2 different foods depending on how hard the dogs work.
When burning the calories its strait Proplan. Yes they do support the dog sports which is a benefit.
Off season I feed Diamond naturals Lamb or Chicken & rice. Diamond is a good food and the dogs love it. They scarf the ProPlan like it was candy. I also notice when on ProPlan they burn up most of it as there is very little poop.

Diamond has numerous recalls over the years . Twice due to dogs death

How he is doing since the switch? I feed Pro Plan currently, but you're right about the savings.

I can't tell any difference except he eats like one more scoop. 4 cups one time a day rather than 3.

Is one of the ingredients on the pro plan label "animal digest"? This is sprayed on some dry dog foods for taste or "palatability". Made from rendered unspecified parts of unspecified animals.

I shovel so much crap into my own body I'm certainly not going to fret over ever ingredient in my dog's food.

Kinda funny how people are so demanding and picky about dog food these days. Not so many years ago plenty of dogs ate the old green bag Purina Dog Chow nearly their entire lives and did just fine. I also remember the first 3 ingredients listed were either corn or wheat products. That food would almost be considered endangerment and cruel punishment. Yet the dogs performed just fine and lived long lives.
So is all the hype about the new performance foods just that ... Hype?
