I usually use 1 piece scope mounts. Seems more rigid & a better 'match' to the tube than a set of rings.
1) For you ring users, do you lap them?

I'm trying to find a non QD 1 piece mount that'll fit a 34mm scope w/20moa cant that's less than $225 but can't seem to find one.
Or a 1 piece mount that's 0 cant & a 20moa picatinny rail for less than $225 for the set but can't find that combo.

Since I can't find either of those two combos, who makes a set of rings for <$150, that don't need to be lapped, that'll hold solid to a 20moa cant picatinny rail?

Those are some badazz looking rings!!!!! Just a smidge over my budget, though. Thanks.

That's a nice 1 piece but it's over my $225 budget & I'd still have to buy a ~$75 20moa rail. Thanks anyways!

I'd lap any ring, one piece or not. You're subject to imperfections in receiver dimensions, mount dimensions, and/or ring dimensions any way you slice it.

I've been very happy with my Ken Farrell 34mm rings. They are solid and don't need to be lapped, as they match perfectly. My S&B 5-25 hasn't moved at all for quite a few rounds on my 300WM. They are $166 a set.

You cannot mount perfectly machined rings on an imperfectly machined receiver using imperfectly made mounts and expect everything to line up. Lapping the rings helps to take care of all these stacked tolerances.

I run it on an 18" 308 sass clone and have no problems dialing out to 1k. What scope you running?

I think I paid under $40 for the pair. Put them on top of my EGW 20moa base and began my lapping process. I was very surprised in how little it took off, mainly just the finish. They have been on the gun for less than a year and seen over 1,000 rounds. Scope hasn't moved and I haven't had a problem.

I got ahead of myself. I've had those rings for over a year, but the 20moa base was new. The base replaced a EGW 0moa base. I simply removed the scope still in the rings, removed the old base and installed the new one, put the rings back on, dialed 20moa and went to the range. First shot was 1 inch high and 1 inch left like always. Next 3 shots settled on the bottom of the bullseye. I'm prett happy with the rings

It'll almost definitely be a Burris XTR II 4-20x50 FFP which has 90 MOA (25mil) adjustment so 12.5 in upwards mil adjustment. Technically I could get by w/out a 20moa rail, at least theoretically.

Spend the cost of lapping and get better rings. You don't have to lap
Get good ones and go. Don't cheap out over $30 for your foundation

EGW one piece pic rail
Talley Tactical or Badger Ordinance rings

I've had rifles fall over and not lose zero. As BIL said, don't short change the foundation. A precision instrument (scope) mounted to a precision machine (rifle and ammo) deserve a well built structure. I have EGW bases on my .22-250, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, and 7 Rem Mag. Every time, on three brands of actions, they have bolted right up. And the Badger and Talley rings have yet to come loose or cause a zero shift. I even bounce one scope between two rifles. From 7mm-08 to .22-250 move impact down .7 Mil and left .3 Mil. Move the scope back to the 7mm-08, reverse the corrections and the zero is within .1 Mil. Can't ask for better than that.

I refuse to lap rings. If they aren't right I return them and get another set.

I think what's being discussed here are rings for picatinny rails which I do not use, so I really can't say that high dollar rings need to be lapped if they are used on picatinny rails. But, as far as other styles go, how are you going to know you should have lapped until you remove a scope and find that the rings have gouged your scope tube? Even expensive rings will do that if they are not in near perfect alignment. Sometimes the alignment is so bad that scope performance is degraded, and it isn't necessarily because the rings are bad. Lapping will tell you you've got an alignment is due before you mount the scope if that's the case, in the worst scenario. And usually you can see that a minor misalignment has been addressed.

I have not had a single scope ring marked since I bought a ring lapping kit, and I lap for EVERY scope installation. I wouldn't be without it.

Yes, rings for pic rails. Badger Ordinance claims their rings are perfect, do not need lapping, and will void the warranty if they are.

In the case of the two pice base I can completely agree with you that lapping every new set of rings is the best policy to have.

So how about the rails themselves? Do you have to buy high dollar picatinny rails to get high dollar rings to align properly?

I spend $60 a piece on rails, EGW aluminum. Guys spend more, of course, but thus far the EGW brand has treated me well.

The Talley rail & Tactical rings are looking nice for ~$210.

I mostly use EGW bases and Warne rings. Warne specifically states not to lap and their rings. I did once and the rings actually gripped too much.

I mounted my arc 10 rings today and they are by far the easiest rings I've ever mounted an they are solid. Look into them if you want a very nice ring. They are pricey but once you get me in your hand and on your gun you will understand.

I use Burris Signature ribs on 3 different rifles...no need to lap.

I use both Zee rings Weaver style and regular style on double dovetail bases.

Seen more than one scope slip under recoil in Zee rings.
