My girlfriends parents live over in Salado area, they have 22 acres that is bordered by a 500 acre tract. They consistently have deer coming off that 500 acre tract and so this year between all the family members they have taken 5 13in and better bucks. Their reasoning is that they are "transient bucks". To me though even if transient they are still their buck population in the area and will hurt it in the long run.

22 acres cannot be managed. Not saying I agree with them killing that many deer off that small a property but there is no management on 22 acres

Management and killing 5 bucks on 22 acres do not belong in the same sentence.

I know their specific land cannot be managed but don't you want to think of the overall general population and management of your surrounding area.

I don't think that will hurt them. More than likely they are transient, prob stopping by for food and moving on. Next year there will be more buck in place of the 5 they killed this year. May not be as big or mature, but then again they might. Takes more than 1 year to pattern dear and get a feel for the herd

To me I would think you would want to not waste your population just because the deer are transient.

If you're interested in forming a co-op with the surrounding landowners, absolutely. Your girlfriend's family are one of the reasons so many high fences have been erected in Texas.

I bet the 500 acre neighbor would hate them if they hunted... and we wonder why there are high fences.

It just depends on the total herd pop and CC of the area.. also it depends on the situation of the 500acre land.. if hunted or not and if it has the means to hold and sustain a lot of deer... sounds like it does.. and if they are killing that many deer every year I don't see it hurting much... it is possible to help out an area with management on any size property.. people think you have to have hundreds or thousands of acres to help with management but every little piece of land contributes to the surrounding area herd.

I don't know how long they have had the land, I do know this is the first year they have gotten a buck off of it, and they have gone crazy with it

Tell me something though just to get a view of things... the surrounding properties/property.. do they have livestock? and your GFs family doe they? what is the condition of both propertys? and the water situation? That area has a huge deer population if some arnt taking it into account... these deer being taken could very well have a positive effect on the surrounding herd
