Getting pretty good with good with my .40, and I have a hog blind set up behind my house at 18 yds. Would I be making a mistake in making that shot?

No. I dropped a sow over 50 yds with a 1911 .45 acp. Wife was more surprised than I was....

Not at all.
Your best success will be on hogs of 150 lbs. and under (with good shot placement), but larger hogs can be taken as well (just expect them to run some distance). If possible... take a neck shot or shoot directly through the middle of the shoulder (not behind it).
My Daughter's first Hog was taken with a .45 acp at a distance of 12 yds. from an 8' tripod stand... when She was 14 years old. Neck shot, dropped the 140 lb. Sow in it's tracks, then a quick 'follow up' shot for insurance to the heart/lung area.
I have shot quite a few Hogs with the .45 acp (none over 25 yds.) and have only failed to recover one.
The .40 S&W has similar muzzle energy when the most popular (standard) loads are used in each....so I see no problem with it.

I hit head on in the chest with a .40 and it dropped, but popped up running like a banshee. In fairness, the shot was more instinctive vs. aiming. The pig walked up on me and I didn't see him until he was about 10 yards away.

I took with my 9mm M&P Shield while walking out into the pasture to go dove hunting a few months ago.
124gr HST in the neck from about 15yds. Like always with killing hogs shot placement is key.
Shield worked great on hogs but didn't manage to hit a single dove with it! (kidding of course)

As mentioned, placement will be a lot of it. Neck and between the eye and ear is good. Don't try to go through a shoulder on a boar due to the shield. Heart and lung is good but it may run a bit.
Also depends what ammo you use. I'm not that up to date on .40. I carry ball for the coup de grace but it hasn't always been effective. Need to find something better. Others may have better suggestions on this.

Any of the bonded flavors will drop em. I hit a 120lb boar at 55 yds (had some luck) with a 124gr xtp factory 9mm quartering away it went maybe 30 yds and keeled over.

We have killed pigs with .22 up to .40 cal before. Shot placement is key as always. Follow up shots never hurt either
