I've got over 8 dogs, some are really nice and some are younger started dogs, the scent must be horrible cause I can't get but about one out of 3 coveys pointed and hardly any singles. We've had a light freeze but could use a better one. Never had so many birds and so little dog work, atleast we have birds now though.

Are they out running their noses?
I'll take a Black Female every time.

It comes and goes with me. We went out on Thanksgiving morning and only pointed 2 of the 8 coveys we moved. The dogs would point and the birds would not be there. We would jump the birds in the area but the locations were really bad.
We went out again on Monday morning and had solid points and great locations on 6 coveys in an hour.

Are they out running their noses? Is this an actual thing because I feel like my dog does it at times.

The pointer to the left in my signature was the fastest bird dog most people had ever seen. She pointed over 50 coneys her first year and only bumped one. We will never know, but I think a bold approach might tend to make the birds hold tighter.

My 8 year old is picking up coveys great, singles also. But he always has. Younger dogs are struggling to get points. Friends dog busted a bid covey, I think they were moving in front of her and she jumped them. Lots of broom weed - the old guys always said the broom weed messed up the dogs. Had a lot of flighty birds yesterday. Bustin out before we got close. Made for a lot of covey chases.

Some young dogs have trouble switching over to wild coveys. Some don't.

Was talking to Dale Rollins last week and he ask me if I thought the birds had been real wild from the start. I said yes. Have good dog work but have to chase 100yds plus to get birds pined and sometime they still get up 30yards in front of pointed dogs.

KC Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy. _________________

We have had some really wild birds, but we have had some really dumb coveys too. I had a covey on open ground yesterday 20' away blinking at me. I had to run in hollering to get them up! The wilder birds run, flush way out, or worse yet-break up on the ground while running. You never get more than a bird or two up at a time with those. We have been using the bump ups as training opportunities to reposition dogs and work on stacking up earlier. my pups are nearing 300 birds shot over them this year, so I feel like we are in tall cotton.
