Which would you choose to hunt most North American game while making a precision rifle? Non-reloader, so ammo availability and cost is a consideration.

To me, these criteria make the 308 a no-brainer. I love and have both calibers, so no bias here...

308, though I am a big fan of the 6.5s when you get into big critters I like a bigger bullet. Sure the 6.5CM can handle elk but I am more confident on that size critter with a little more bullet weight than most factory loads that are available for the CM

Also just about any bullet type is available for the 308 to cover a wide range of critters.

If you were a reloader would say flip a coin

You could also split the difference and use one of my favorite rounds 7mm-08.

^^This^^

I am a 6.5 Creedmoor owner, a 7mm-08 owner, and a renewed .308 owner. I'd have to say the 6.5 Creemoor is my favorite rifle of the bunch, but I am a hand loader so I can build ammo for just about any task for it. And I agree with Kevin, the 7mm-08 does bridge the gap nicely between the speed and BC of the 6.5 Credmoor and the available ammo and larger bullets of the .308.

If a guy was going to be a one short action rifle man my inclination would be toward the 7mm-08. (I would make mine A.I.)

+1. If you don't reload, the 308 makes the most sense. Tons of factory ammo and it's usually cheaper because it's so popular.

How do you intend to use the rifle?

Kind regards, charlesb

Creedmoor hands down over the .243. Love my .243 but in a custom build, the 6.5 wins.

building a creedmore right now, however if north american game is the idea then 308 is the only one out of that choice. While I dont love the 308 it is the best of the two choices if north american game is the idea.

If it were just the whitetail I'd say go for the 243. Mule deer can get pretty big though. - I saw a truly enormous mule deer a few years back in the Lincoln National Forest.

So for what you intend to hunt, I think TCB has the right idea. - The 6.5 Creedmoor will serve you better than the .243 Winchester.

Kind regards, charlesb

Put me down in the 308 Winchester group. Either one can be used successfully, but the 308 gives you an edge, especially with factory loads.

Since hunting is an expensive, once in a while kind of thing, I'd recommend finding a premium factory load that gets along well with your rifle. There are several clear advantages there that make them well worth the bit of extra expense.

Kind regards, charlesb

6.5 ether way for me. I run the 129s on mule deer down and the 143s on mule deer up.

On the basis of ammunition availability alone the 308 wins hands down. I own 7-08 and 308 and prefer the 7mm-08 on whitetail.

Why limit yourself? I want one of each.... grin

Now as far as the wife is concerned, I only have one rifle and I don't remember the caliber whistle
