While sitting in the blind the other day. I see a nice 8 point walking down the neighbor’s side of the fence. The buck is badly limping, has a rough spot on his back. Like he was hit by a truck. Do I put the deer out of his misery or let him walk? I’m kicking myself for letting him walk.

That's poaching. Be a tough call to make. But a felony it is nonetheless. And depending on what GW you got you could be arrested or given a pass, regardless of the circumstances.

Gotta shoot him and say he jumped the fence if you're worried about the trouble. It's the right thing to do if the deer is suffering.

Not sure the GW would agree, but I bet your neighbor would be okay with it if you can prove he was injured/suffering.

It would be against the law.
Wild animals are tuff critters if its not legal and you don't want to decorate it with you tag for what it is I say let mother nature sort it out. Good shot the deer will live.

Shoot the deer? Not even a question. The law is not above an animal suffering in my opinion. Any game warden that doesn't let that pass needs to reevaluate why he is a game warden.

Shooting an animal over a fence is still shooting an animal over a fence, injured or not. I can't think of any reason I would shoot over a fence, even for an injured deer.
I have killed many deer on the side of the road when I lived in San Angelo. Never used a gun, always a knife. Had a sheriff pull up one time when I was about to do the deed. He allowed me to kill the animal and made the comment it was a good thing I wasn't using a gun.
I have put suffering animals down in the field and didn't tag them. I called the GW, explained the situation and where the deer was at. He allowed me to shoot the animal and told me to let it lay exactly where it was. Couldn't take the antlers or any other part of the animal, but had no issue with me shooting it. We have a new GW and I will call him before doing the same thing.

I agree that it's poaching. Plain and simple. Wounded deer or not, the law is the law.

I agree that it's poaching. Plain and simple. Wounded deer or not, the law is the law. 100%. It's not your job to dispatch every wounded animal in the woods. Nature can be cruel sometimes, deal with it. Coyotes and buzzards are here for a reason and will clean him up.

Is it worth a fine, losing your license, and possibly your right to hunt for several years? If you can answer yes, then you have no business hunting anyways.

I hunt with family land on all sides of me and I would NEVER shoot over a fence. Never!

Nature can be cruel sometimes, deal with it. Coyotes and buzzards are here for a reason and will clean him up. Yep, you did the right thing. Deer might recover; if not, varmints will eat well. If it was on your place it might be a different story if you really felt he was mortally wounded or you were going to make use of him.

We're not here to play God. Nature takes care of itself. Putting down a wounded animal has nothing to do with playing God. You have your rules and I have mine. If I ever see a wounded deer on the other side of the fence I will put it down. All of you can sit there and watch it suffer just because it is 5 yards on the other side of a barbed wire fence.

I hope you and I aren't neighbors. You said if you see a wounded deer on the other side of the fence you would put it down. How far over the fence? 400 yards close enough? You have admitted to poaching if the opportunity presents itself. That tarnishes the reputation of all of us that hunt. Thanks for nothing.

Not your place to shot it, it's not on your property. I watched an 8 pt. 12 yds from me over T'giving weekend, had a large cut across his front shoulders, like an arrow went high. He was walking ok but when he started trotting has a noticeable limp. Figured as long as it doesn't get a bad infection, he'll make it through.

I don't get a hard on for taking long shots like a lot of other guys. I just like being an ethical hunter and putting meat in the freezer. Putting a deer down that is wounded and walking 20-30 yards over the fence is the right thing to do. My neighbor actually drove over to our camp last deer season because he wanted us to put down a yearling buck that was dragging itself around with 2 legs near his house, so I don't have to worry about it too much. He is a stand up guy that cares more about ethics and doing the right thing rather than a made up property line. Very glad we aren't neighbors as well because we wouldn't get along very well.

So based on your theory, just how far is it ok to shoot onto someone else's property? And you mention "made up" property lines. Ask 100 guys on this forum and I bet 100 will tell you you're wrong. Do you just hop fences and hunt where you like since the property line is made up? As for not getting along, you started this thread by saying the buck was on the neighbors and then you end it by saying the neighbor asked you to shoot a yearling buck last year that was injured. If that's the case, why not just shoot the wounded 8 point you saw if the neighbor had already given you the go ahead to shoot a deer on his place?

First off, I have never said anything about hopping fences and hunting. I said if an injured deer looked like it was suffering and was 20-30 yards over the fence I would put it out of its misery. Learn how to read more carefully. Second off, I did not start this thread. So again, please read more carefully.
