I'd go with the heaviest hunting bullets you can find. I think that's 105 grains. I'd buy three or four boxes from different mfgs. All in the same bullet weight. Then shoot 3 shot groups with each box of ammo and see which one the gun likes best. Once you've determined the best brand and bullet for his rifle, go buy a 200 round case. You'll have 10 boxes all from the same lot #. That should last your son several years, and all of it will shoot pretty much the same.

P.S. All groups should be fired from a clean, cold barrel. So your going to want to take cleaning supplies with u to the range. A quick bore cleaning and about 15 minutes between groups should be about right.

Get Remington Core-Lokt 100 grain psp. They will be as accurate as they need to be. My son killed a 10 pt last year and a 10 pt this year with same bullet. Good luck to you and your son!

As for bullets, I shoot Sierra Game King, Berger, Barnes and Swift Sirrocco. I'm not a fan of Hornady bullets, but that .243 may love them.

All the above is only if you want a tack driver that'll shoot sub MOA. If you simply want to hit a 12" square at 100 yards, then I agree with the gentleman above. Remington Core-Lokt bullets have probably killed more whitetails than all the rest combined.

Thanks guys, seems the older I get the more I over think stuff. This gun is no diff than the 20 other rifles I have lol. The diff brand same weight is a great way to do it. One of my 7 mags a win model 70 loves grey box winchester. Some of my other guns hate it! Thanks again.

I think you'll get a lot of opinions on the brand of ammo. I have Remington ADL 700 in .243. It likes 100 gr Core-Lokts and 100 gr Federal Power Shok. I really didn't think the Federal would shoot that well, but I've gotten my best groups from it...1" at 100 yards. I did bed the action in epoxy and put in a Timney trigger, as it wasn't shooting 1" groups when first bought it.

I used the 100gr Coreloct's to do the barrel break-in on my kids Weatherby 243 and they grouped so well I kept using them. We have probably taken 12 deer with them and every deer we have ever shot with them has had a nice pass-through and good blood trails. I also tried the similarly priced Federal's in the blue box and some el-cheapo Monarch's and of the three, the Coreloct's just seem to group the best. This year, I tried out the Hornaday SST Lite loads in 243 and they seem to be pretty nice. The upside is they kick like a 223 and the kids really like shooting them. The downside is that my son shot two does this year and neither had exit wounds. Thankfully, he dropped both deer where they were standing and we didn't have to do any tracking. However, I've personally seen similar issues on 5 other deer with the regular power Hornaday SST's in 243's and 308 and people on this forum have posted similar things about how the SST's blow apart when they enter deer and don't exit. So I'm always nervous that when I shoot something with them, I'm not going to have a good blood trail because I won't get an exit wound.

Thanks,
Rich

I shoot the 100 grain Remmington Core-Lokts out of my .243 and they have done the job with no complaints. My sons also use that same round in their .243's. Altogether we killed 3 deer, 1 hog and 3 javelina last season and 1 deer this season so far. I'm sticking with this ammo, it's been good to us.

My daughter shoots a Weatherby Vanguard .243 and my son shoots a Remington 700 .243. They use Hornady Whitetail 100 grain ammo. Both guns shoot less than inch moa at 100 yards. The bullet also does a good job on animals. This year so far 3 shots, all dead where they stood.

I have used Winchester 100 power point ammo with great results. Now that I reload I use 100 grain Hornady soft points with the same results DRT. I wouldn't be afraid to use 85 grain Sierra Gameking I know they work very well on pigs .

Thanks for all the info guys. Gonna do some sighting in tomorrow, then let him get comfortable with the gun. He's a good shot so it shouldn't take to long. Gonna try for him a spike this weekend. Will have the 223 with us just in case something doesn't go right. Thanks again all.

Thanks, bud. He's been a trooper this year so far. Lots of stand time and lots of rain. Can't ask for much more than that. We have hunted our lease out west and our land in east Texas. Gonna try my buddies ranch this weekend. He has a spike he wants gone so maybe Trent will be lucky enough to bust him. We will see!

My favorite gun to shoot is a 243. I've had a Winchester Model 70 for about 15 years and it has never let me down. I really like the Winchester 95 gr ballistic silvertip bullets. Every deer that has been shot with this gun has dropped in its tracks.
