I was reading a magizene the other day that had a buck that grossed scored over 200 that was only 11 1/2 inches wide it was a very mature deer. Since the AR is to mainly target older mature deer since it's not wide enough would you still shoot it?

We had a discussion like this the other day when watching a hunting show. The buck was a monster but was very tall and narrow. The law is the law, and I don't know that you will get many to self incriminate

No ARs where I hunt. Does that tell you my answer?

It would be cool if you could text the game warden a picture and have him buy off on it as knowing it is a mature deer and definitely a shooter

It's happened before. Not with the text message, but the GW giving a pass on an illegal deer that was fully mature

As big and old as that deer was he wasn't getting any bigger.

If you are referring to the one in Rack magazine, I saw that too, and yes, I would kill it all day long!!!

I do not hunt an AR county. If I did and saw a 200 inch fully mature deer that did not meet AR's I would probably be glad I process my own meat.

I've always been a meat hunter and have never agreed with antler restrictions. As far as I am concerned the tag belongs to the hunter and if he/she is happy with a buck they should be able to shoot it. So my answer is yes, if legal that deer will go down.

Yes, but he is saying the deer is in an AR county, is not legal by AR's but is a huge mature buck. Now, what do you do?

Pass him or break the law?

Back when Johnny Law would allow it.
Our neck of the woods is full of narrow racked bucks.
Now they are safe and allowed to spread their genes.
So there'll be more and more bucks that get to live.
I personally think the only thing ugly about a tall narrow racked buck
is the fact that they're illegal to shoot.

the GW I know wouldn't do that for a buddy, on a 13pt that will probably go 150-155" 5-6yr old and they told him law is the law, doesn't matter. He wants this deer gone and can't. Told her he would shoot him between the eyes, she just laughed they know each other good.

I have and would again in a heartbeat. I've got a 221 that's 13 7/8 and a 210 that is 11 0/8. I love wide deer as much as most. In truth, width looks nice but is the least important in total inches of antler. Give me long beams, great mass and a bunch of long tines and I'm happy. However, I would never kill a buck if doing so violated the law. Nor would I ever put a GW in that position.

My brother shot a mature narrow racked buck Thanksgiving weekend.
Yes, we are in an AR county. He said I could tell his story.
His buck's antlers were 1/2 inch of being legal but thick and tall.
A 10 point. He went ahead and fessed up to the GW.
The GW made him cut the head off and give it to him, wrote him a citation and let
him keep the rest of the deer. My brother called the judge today. $200 fine. Coulda been worse.
The GW said it was a mature but illegal buck. He kept what the TP&W is protecting
and let my brother keep the good part, the part deemed legal (mature body). Aside from my brother
paying $200, he's not really upset because he got to keep the venison, the part he wanted the most anyway.

I've seen some trophy buck that were not wide enough to be legal but I'm not willing to risk the ticket I like my squeaky clean record. In most cases I support the AR's it helps keep the trigger happy yahoos from killing off the young bucks but I do think the restrictions need a tweek or two to make it legal to take a mature buck like that mabey a height or point exception.

"trigger happy yahoos"?
A 13" buck can still be young as well as a legal spike and you can kill both now in one season.
How bout body size exception? We all know the only way to really age a deer is by it's teeth and you
can't check those out unless the deer's dead or tranquilized. Maybe the GWs should check to see if an
illegal dead buck is mature by checking their teeth, if it's over a certain age, it's legal.
Could be they don't know how to do that though?

That's interesting. I always kinda figured most would let a big mature deer slide.

Know a guy that killed a buck in Mexico that was 12" inside and the buck scored in the 160's. I killed one before AR's that was an 8pt that was right at 140", it has a 12.5" inside spread.

The 13-inch rule was created as an improvement over points-based restrictions that were found to "high grade" the herd where first implemented. High grading refers to only taking the best of the bucks, or those with the best potential to develop good racks. IMO, because the 13-inch rule was implemented without a means to allow hunters to take mature, narrow-racked deer, common sense would dictate that high grading on width is very possible.

Of course, biologists will tell you it's not possible for the same reasons that biologists claimed high grading woukd not occur with points-based restrictions. While I have always agreed with the current AR's, a rule that allows hunters to take ANY buck that reaches the older targeted age group is sorely needed.

What if they had a check station in every AR county where all bucks had to be taken and if the deer is teeth aged by a GW and is 4.5+ then it would be legal to take a narrow racked buck. If it's a 2.5 year old then you get a ticket, lose your deer and lose your lisence for 3-5 years

I think something like that could work

Good luck getting anyone to check in their deer. I believe this whole deal has gotten out of hand. A deer is a deer, be happy you can hunt, procure your own meat, and - if it's a big one - be happy you outsmarted a wise one.
