Has the gun laws changed where you can carry in college on campus? Are there any special stipulations? Do you think its a good idea? I'm just trying to open up a discussion about it and get your views.

Thanks,
CM

Has passed, but doesn't go into effect until Aug 1, 2016. I'm all for it.

Authorizes a license holder to carry a concealed handgun on or about the license holder's person while the license holder is on the campus of an institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education in this state. Open carrying of handguns is still prohibited at these locations.

Authorizes an institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education in this state to establish rules, regulation, or other provisions concerning the storage of handguns in dormitories or other residential facilities that are owned or leased and operated by the institution and located on the campus of the institution.

Requires the president or other chief executive officer of an institution of higher education in this state to establish reasonable rules, regulations, or other provisions regarding the carrying of concealed handguns by license holders on the campus or on specific premises located on the campus.

Authorizes posting of a sign under Penal Code Section 30.06 with respect to any portion of a premises on which license holders may not carry.
The effective date of this law for a public junior college is August 1, 2017

The UT system is still establishing rules. Most of the large, crowded places will be restricted areas. This means no guns where sporting events take place, gyms, etc. Also, no guns where mental health services are offered.

Laws and signs have always been so effective at keeping a deranged individuals from shooting people......... smirk

A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.

I know. I didn't say I agreed with the logic, just what is being proposed...

Also, private colleges do not have to follow suit.

I left my job to return to school, and at 27 years old coming from an emergency dispatch position, I REALLY would feel better with firearms on campus (It's terrible to converse with someone who really needs a firearm to defend themselves and doesn't have one.) I have a feeling it is going to fail on my campus as it has most other private schools in the area.

We had a little meeting on campus as the bill demands that faculty consult the student body before making a decision. Some of the arguments against carry were downright frightening, they were so stupid. The biggest argument I heard was "I don't want to be distracted and scared by a gun when I am trying to learn" (Hello? Concealed is concealed...) to "I would rather die than have to use a gun!" (Okay, but don't make that choice for me!)

The "no guns in crowded areas" makes me laugh, too. So you know, in the areas you are most likely to need one.

The status of campus regulations for UT Austin can be followed at the website specifically created for this issue
http://campuscarry.utexas.edu/
The Preliminary Report is a painful look at the state of college campus mindset today.
Many UT campuses are following the progress of this committee as their regulations will likely mirror UT Austin's to a great degree.

One thing that needs to be considered, however, is gun/weapons education. A lot of these universities have students from all over the world....many of these countries do not allow gun ownership. There was a recent 'gun scare' at UTA. A person alerted police to someone in military fatigues carrying what appeared to be a weapon. It put the university on lockdown for almost an hour. It was a guy wearing camo pants and carrying a tripod (for photography)...Um, yeah...but the person who alerted police wasn't used to the sight. I mean, to me, it's Texas...and I grew up with guns...had a gun rack on my truck window when I was in school...roflmao
