Looking for something besides my big LED spot light to track a deer in the dark. Something small enough to fit in my backpack, but bright. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Keep a couple LED Lenser 7 series lights around when I need them for tracking. What I like is the easy flood to spot of them and bright enough to find things

Best tracking light though is possibly still a coleman lantern

This is what I use and I love it. Got it for a great price last Cyber Monday so they may have it for a good price tomorrow.

I have a Petzl headlamp, has four brightness setting and a red setting. It has been great. It's my second one because the first fell out of my pocket and was run over. Not sure anybody makes one that can stand a truck running over it!

I just use a headlamp and a small flashlight that uses 2 CR123 batteries.

I've always wondered about the "blood tracking" lights

IMO blood tracking lights are a gimmick and I have several flashlights with that feature. Much easier to use the regular beam and see the bright red blood than the blackish color the 'tracking light' produces.

This little guy is the best light I've owned. Hard to find in stock at walmart, and academy doesn't carry them, but when I do find one I snatch it up (i have a few). It's super bright cree led, one AA battery, red, and blood tracking (dumb). small enough to keep one wherever you need it, decent battery life, cheap battery replacement.

Any opinion on which is better for tracking an LED or regular incandescent bulb?

I remember tracking a few hogs that my dad and I shot. I had an old style mag light and my brother had a LED mag light. One was noticeably easier to see the red color blood with, but I don't remember which.

If you don't mind spending a little money I think a surefire is about the brightest compact flashlight you can get

And for good reason. Unlike lights with super bright spot beams, a Coleman double mantle gas lantern works best at lighting up a 360 degree circle around you.

I remember the time a good friend asked me to help him find a buck after not locating it after a long search. He seemed surprised when I grabbed my Coleman lantern. I found his buck in less than 10 minutes after walking along the edge of a stock tank that he had checked earlier. The buck was laying at the bottom of a short bank and apparently hidden from the beam of his expensive flashlight.

I saw the TRKR 250 at Walmart yesterday and wondered if it was any good. Looked like a good light. It was $25

No doubt those surefire lights are bright but man they're proud of em! Also, this may have changed by now but they use expensive batteries and having xenon bulbs.. Burn through those batteries pretty quick as well.

You don't need a sure fire

From using a light almost daily for my profession to look at some nasty crap sometimes brighter isn't always better.

Look for an adjustable flood to spot

And the answer you're looking for is incandescent or more of s yellow light instead of blue.

I would go with a good headlight that takes aaa and a good little flashlight. That bushnell would work.

Battery mileage is king. Keep it simple aaa or aa battery

Can't go wrong with a Streamlight or Pelican. There are cheaper alternatives, too.

You can buy a Surefire flashlight for $250 that produces 1000 lumens for 2-1/2 hours, or for a lot less money, get a Coleman lantern that produces 1540 lumens for 7-1/2 hours.

Yes, there is a reason the folks at Surefire sell batteries by the 12-pack.
