OK I'm hijacking my own post here, but what about 7 mm-08? What are everyone's pet rifles in full size 7 mm-08?

I have a Ruger American Predator in 308 with an 18" barrel and it will do what you're looking for in the original post. I also have a Remington 700 Varmint model with aftermarket stock and trigger that will group 1/2 to 3/4" groups all day at 100 yards. In fact, I think many manufactures entry level rifles can achieve 1-1.5" groups at 100 yards out of the box with good ammo. I'm no expert like some of he people posting in this thread, but you don't have to break the bank to have an accurate hunting rifle out to 500 yards.

With the factory barrel, and a hand load it shot 1" @ 300 yards. Now with the 20" barrel it shoots a tad tighter and pushes a 162 gr A-max 2635 fps MV.

I had a FN SPR A5M that shot lights out. However it was also $2500 so you kind of expect that. But it was a cheaper option than going custom.
Jason, what is the specs on that rifle? I want to clone it in 260 rem.

Tikka action Obermeyer 1:9" M40 contour (I believe) Manners T-4 CDI Precision bottom metal EGW 20 MOA aluminum pic rail
If I might suggest, if you're building one, chamber it in 6.5 Creedmoor instead of .260 Rem. Makes the same speed as the .260, uses less powder doing it, and tends to have lower ES due to better case geometry.
One other thing you could change is the stock. We just put a Manners MCS-EH1 on a friend's Tikka .300 Win Mag. That stock is feather weight! Manners says 26 oz. and I believe it. You can balance that stock on your pinkie finger.

My Savage model 10 with 20" heavy barrel shoots lights out at the 100-400yrd range. Might not be the prettiest guns but for the price I have enjoyed mine alot! Not to bad on the eyes if you ask me though

I also have a Savage Model 10 with a 20" heavy barrel that shoots well, everything from 110 vmax, to 150 sierra game kings, and above. I restocked it with a heavy laminate stock and it's what i let the beginners and the ladies use in the deer blind, i also like to use it at longer distances on the prairie dogs. Love the 308 round, amazingly versatile.

Hand a tack driver to a great shooter and he will drive tacks. Hand a tack driver to a chit shooter and he will spread them all over the paper.
Amen brother!!! It can be witnessed at your local range on almost any given weekend - especially around this time of year. Someone takes a tack driver out to get dopes/re-zero and it's consistently driving 5 round groups into a dime at 100 yards and you get a novice shooter out behind the same rifle, shooting the same loads, at the same distance and they're putting 5 rounds in a 6" diameter "group" - it's not the rifle or rounds at this point!!!
Hunt.

What's the most accurate 308 rifle for deer hunting at moderate ranges, say 100 to 400 yards? I'm speaking more in terms of barrel weight than rifle brand. Normally I like Ruger, Winchester, and Remington, so brand is not that big of a deal. Also, I'm not talking about AR's. You guys that love AR's more power to you but I'm a bolt action guy. Given your need and your overall knowledge in rifles (which seems pretty low, given the way you’re asking this question…just being honest….don’t take it bad) ….. Any modern bolt gun will do the job. Just stay light and cheap and don’t go over 24” of barrel length (on the skinny side).
