Well I went on a hunt with an outfitter, won't name outfitter. He usually drops us off in stands and sort of let's us do our own thing but stayed in the stand with us and was totally a pain in the a$$ about hurrying shots. Is it just me or does having to experience the whole hunt with a complete stranger take away from the hunt? I go hunting to get away but when I'm paying my hard earned money to have someone in the stand demanding when to shoot, how to hunt ect just take away from the experience?

The reasons you gave are the reasons I don't sit with a hunter. The hunters is the one that picks out what they want or don't want. I also like it because I am not ask the qualities of the Deer. The only time I am involved with the actual hunt is if I am asked for them to hunt safari style. Then if we see something and I am asked I tell them if you like it take it. It is your choice. Did you ask why the hunt was changed this year?

You just had a bad guide
I've a ton of hunts and been guided and never had a situation you described
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

What happened to you is one of the reasons I rarely go on guided hunts.
Semi-guided is about as close as I get so I don't have to deal with spending all day with a person I might not be comfortable with.

Sounds like a terrible guide, sorry you had to experience that. I ran hunts for 9 years with 100% repeat business the last 5 years. My customers would get mad if me or one of my guides didnt sit with them, lol.
Let'em grow old

Two problems, when you first meet someone you don't know anything about them and therefore don't know what kind of knowledge they have of the animals they are trying to hunt. So a guide helps clarify that and minimize mistakes. The biggest issue that a few bad apples has ruined for everyone is this.......not everyone is honest. And unfortunately if the outfitter doesn't know you yet, or for some reason doesn't trust you then what other option is there? It's a pain for both the client and outfitter I think, and shows what a few dishonest people can change for everyone.

Sounds like a bad guide. I've been on three 1-1 guided whitetail hunts (with the same guide) and they've been great. Never hurried to take a shot, in fact, generally encouraged to take my time.

I have gone on several hunts with Outfitters and agree some can be real pushy about wanting you to "just kill" and get the hunt over with. Those are the ones you never re-book.
I have an Outfitter in Iowa that I have hunted with every year but one (did not draw a tag) since 2006. Everyone stays in the same house (hunters, guides, outfitter and cook), and most clients are repeat clients so I also know some of the folks. Over the years I have gotten to know all the stands, we get dropped off at the stand and you hunt by yourself....you decide what to shoot (since it is your hunt). His only rule is that you stay in the stand so as not to "educate the deer" by walking around. Hunting with him is like going to hunting camp with friends. Those are the Outfitters you rebook with.

I enjoy semi-guided hunts as often as I can afford them. If I were on a hunt where inches of bone meant money I might want the expert there to make the call. However that probably a type of hunt I will ever be able to afford so . . . I like hunts though where the focus is the good time, shared experiences with friends and not worrying about prep, clean up and the work of the lease.

I've been on quite a few guided hunts and the vast majority of them have been great. I've also been on drop camp type hunts, where the outfitter just gets you to the hunting area, gives a little advice, and then goes away until he is scheduled to come back. All those have gone fine, but if I have the money, I've found that I really enjoy a guided hunt.
The advantage to hiring a guide is his personal knowledge of the land and the animals. If I already knew the land and what to expect from the animals, there would be no reason for a guide. But on all the good hunts, my guide has proven to be much faster then I am at finding animals, and better at judging them. It's fun when I spot an animal first, but I have no ego in this, so it's nice to have that second set of eyes there that are better then mine!!!!!
On the bad hunts, I found that the guide and I just didn't mesh. One was a young kid out of Ohio who was on his first year as an elk guide in Montana. He had never hunted elk before, had never had a client get an elk, and just wanted to hunt the same spot every day. He didn't like to climb the ridges to glass for elk, and when we did without him, he pouted and refused to talk to us anymore. The other one was a guy out of Soda Springs Idaho who pretty much just made everything up. He was later arrested for poaching, trespassing, selling land that wasn't his and lying about landowner tags for clients that he didn't have. He tried to bribe me into not talking to the Game Wardens with a refund. I took the refund and told the Game Wardens everything I knew!!!
On all my other hunts, I made lifelong friends and had a fantastic time. I didn't always get an animal, but we always saw animals!!!
If I wanted to sit in a blind on my own, I would be sure to mention that to my guide. I can't think of a guide who would have a problem relaxing for a few hours if he clients wanted to have a quiet time in a stand on their own.

Years ago, I was guided on a hunt at the Y.O. Ranch by a world famous guide, Bob Snow. It was his "off season" since he guided Jaguar hunts in South America. The going price in those days was $60 for 3 does (60's) I was a poor boy and could only afford to kill 2. He was the nicest guy I ever hunted with and could gut a deer in less than a minute. I learned a lot about knives and how to do it on that one trip. I gave him $10 which was a fortune to me and he sent me a thank you note. Something I will never forget.

Have done some outfitted hunts that were fantastic and a couple not so much. Still like to hunt without a guide or outfitter but there are pluses and minuses to both routes.
Mostly have a good time and enjoy yourself.
