Upland hunting that is.

Just curious.

We've been hunting pretty hard for two days. Dog has been asleep since 3pm and I can tell he's sore. Thought he was in good shape. Lol

Have you been taking along any water and energy treats for break times ? Have you been keeping your dogs exercised during off season ? Dogs in good shape should be able to handle a good long weekend hunt without problems provide they are in good shape .

He gets exercise at home but not as much as I'd like to get him. How much should they run a day?

We take water breaks. Never thought of energy treats.

Have you checked the dog's paws? Hard dry ground, brush and stubble can take a toll on them. That is what I saw on my dog after a couple of long days hunting in South Dakota this year. After that, I added Scott's Nylon boots and Tuff Foot to the hunting bag.

You may need another dog. smile That way you can rest one while you work the other.

Most dogs will get sore after two days hunting. A five hour hunt is a pretty full day for them. That's three hours on a morning hunt and a couple on the afternoon hunt. I never give treats while hunting.

He was good this morning once we got out there. We're done for the weekend now though. Headed home. He's definitely wore out.

Sweese, I told my wife the same thing.

On another note, this morning he was acting birdy but never went on point. Then he just sprinted into some tall grass and busted 7 pheasant that were like 10 yards away.
What's the deal? Did he just lose his mind and need to work it out on more wild birds or what? Yesterday he pointed that single I shot like a champ. Was steady until I released him to fetch and everything.

Just my thoughts on it.
I'v got two dogs that will pace themselves, and will edge heavy cover if they have the option.
Lucy, the same breeding as yours will go full out the whole time, and straight through anything in her path. A lot prettier to watch cover a field, but it takes a toll on her.
You can road Blue, and start using Tuff foot on him 2-3 weeks before hunting.

As to why he pointed one pheasant and busted the group. It could be any number of things.
If he has mainly been worked on singles, a group can make a dog come unwound.

Plenty of water, and a energy treat works to keep them going longer. I've even used a packet of honey, for a quick energy boost. If they are sore, a day or two of rest is most all dogs will need. If they are all scraped up, and I need them to hunt the next day, soak them in a warm Epson salt bath, and a Tramadol that night. If they tear their feet up, the hunts over till they heal.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Lucy sounds exactly like blue. Haha

Sometimes I wonder if he's outrunning his nose.

It depends on what condition your dogs are in and how much heart they have. Sore pads are rarely an issue with my dogs if I am not hunting in grassburs, dog pear or crusted snow. I hunt them 5-7 hours a day and have hunted them as long as 6 days straight. I might have to set them off the tailgate, but once they limber up and smell a lion, bobcat or coon, they are ready to go.
You cannot expect a dog that has been sitting in a kennel for weeks to be able to hunt these long hours, no different than someone training for a marathon. Dogs cannot carry any extra weight so I would rather have mine a little thin than a little heavy. The only time that I don't want to see ribs is when I am hunting them in extremely cold conditions.
Adios,
Gary

Lion country sells a product called glycocharge. It definitely works designed for multi day hunts. another factor I find is until the temps stay below 40 deg the colder weather is a big factor running dogs hard

I just purchased four tubs,(one case)of Dog Forte from Bauer Supply in Missouri. It is advertised on Black Gold Dog Food site. I plan to use it when lion hunting in rugged terrain and conditions. John Allen who I consider a professional in canine nutrition recommended this product to me when I explain how hard we were pushing these dogs.
Adios,
Gary

On the whole I'm with Bill. It depends on several things. How long are hunting, how fit is your dog, what the country's like and an enormous part is played by what breed he is. I have a Pointer that will go all hours of the day and loves to run. In 100-plus degree heat she'll be out running and my Setter will be under the pickup sucking wind.
