A 6.5x55 as a medium game cartridge. Thinking of picking one up because I've always been intrigued by the swede but have no practical experience with it

The predecessor to the .260 Rem and the 6.5 Creedmoor that have gained much popularity.
It can push a 140 gr north of 2800 fps. Great medium game cartridge!

I was surprised by the 6.5x55 when I tried it out some years ago, it turned out to be easy to load, and quite accurate.
The long 140 grain bullets inspire confidence, they look like they would penetrate well if a situation required that.
Having said that, I've never hunted with any 6.5 so far but if the situation arose, I'm certain that those bullets would do well for anything but the very heaviest and most dangerous big game.
The 6.5x55 is about as close to an ideal whitetail round as one can find. The recoil is not bad at all, but it still has plenty of horsepower for the job at hand.

Don't have a 6.5x55, but I do have a couple 260's. Both hunting style guns (Sako 85 Hunter and Tikka T3 Hunter). Shot a blackbuck and a cull Whitetail buck with the 120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Caliber size entrance and quarter size exit wounds with off side shoulder being hit on the way out. Haven't tried any other ammo on game yet.

The 6.5X55 has been getting the job done for over for over 120 years and will continue for a long time to come. With the long for caliber cup and core bullets it made a name for itself long before most of us here were alive in Europe on game as large as Moose.
Like Fireman said it is ballistics are about the same as the 6.5 Creedmoor and 260 Remington or perhaps more appropriately those are modern short action versions of the much older 6.5X55.
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch
