Posted a while back on this. But, I bought my son a Henry lever action 30-30. He is 13 years old. He will eventually go to iron sights exclusively. But for now, he would like to put a scope on it.

I have narrowed it down to these two scopes based on budget and recommendations. For all you Lever Action guys out there...wanted to see which ya'll would recommend of the two:

1. Leupold VX-I 2-7x33 (variable)

2. Weaver K4 (fixed 4x38)

Thanks!

Leupold. I just simply always prefer a variable power scope. At maximum range for a 30-30 of 150 yards, IMO, a 4x is getting to the point where it may not be enough scope. Especially if it's a multipurpose rifle that could be used for varmints, or pigs.

2X7 is one of my favorite power range scope and have tried a few and still own several. 2x is where they stay most of the time while hunting but can turn them up for longer shots.

2x7. The 2 is for those times that the target comes too close for a larger scope.

Weaver 4X fixed on my Marlin 30-30 Lever Action. Works great for us.

My way of seeing it is that the .30-30 is meant to shoot larger targets and relatively short range. If 4x isn't enough, the target is too far away. Maybe 6x would be suitable.
