I know I made another post about Kansas but as we pack up in thinking of changing plans. What's a good base city if I were to decide to go to SD to hunt public? Platte?

Platte has been our base for the last two years and the hunting this year was excellent. Track down the SD Hunting guide it has good maps showing were the public land opportunities are. Between road edge and the public land you should have no trouble finding your share of birds.

I have stayed in Harrold (very tiny town) and hunted the walk-in properties. The hotel manager put us on a family hunt that did not have dogs. The walk-in properties were productive. If I remember correctly, in SD you can hunt the road ditches.

I have also stayed in Pierre and hunted the grasslands. You can get a mixed bag of sharptail and pheasant on the grasslands a lot of room on the grass lands for big running dogs! I don't have big running dogs. smile

While staying in Valentine, NE, (I was hunting sharptail and chickens in NE sandhills) I met some hunters that were hunting the Rosebud Reservation in SD. I remember they did really well! I also remember, they were in possession of too many birds and got caught. It was not pretty as they had crossed state lines and the reservation boundaries. That made it a federal crime!A lot of law enforcement vehicles at the hotel that night.

If you hunt the Rosebud you have to have an Indian guide; trust me its tough to find a competent one that knows pheasant hunting well. Lock up all your stuff if you go there as well, had two different thefts of my vehicle in that area (one on the reservation, one at a hotel in Valentine).

Appreciate the help guys. Almost to Wichita, Kansas now. Didn't mean to waste yalls time but we decided on a spot in Nebraska that I'm sort of familiar with.
Kids are coming (9 and 5) so I decided not to completely wing it this time.
