I have a Rem 700 22-250 with a 26" heavy varmint barrel. Would I be making a mistake having the barrel cut to 20" and threaded?

No, it would not. When I bought my 220 Swift many years ago, I bought it off a New Mexico rancher. It was a Ruger 77V, with the heavy barrel, and he had it shortened to 20 inches. His logic was that it would easily fit on the dashboard of his truck, so he could blast coyotes when he saw them. Anyway, that rifle shot super, though I'm sure I lost some MV. But, I had plenty to spare.

That sounds like a rifle I'd like to have. Little handy small caliber. I'm in the market for a .223 for the same kind of thing. Small and handy.

22-250>223

My 22-250 started out as a youth stock gun, so it already came with the 20" barrel. I've found that very useful in box blind and safari style situations, although it's not heavy barreled or too heavy.

Loose some velocity but sure makes for a handy rig. Had a Sako Forester handi hunter carbine in 22-250 for several years should have never traded it.

Cut it down if a handy rifle is what you are looking for.

Even a 20" .22-250 will push a 55 gr scortching fast.

There is no right or wrong answer. I prefer long barrels so if it were mine it would be left as is. It is your rifle though so if you want a shorter barrel then go for it.

Let us know who does the work and how it turns out. I may chop my 26" down to 20 and have a heavy fluting done to reduce weight

will do, I'm leaning towards Derrick. He's done two rifles for me and both are really, really did I say really nice. I'll work it out and post some pic's when it's done.

My next build is going to be a 22-250 AI with a 1-8 twist and 20 inch barrel threaded for my suppressor.

That short 220 of mine was a joy. I was doing a lot of hunting as a host on a corporate ranch, and driving the jeep full of guests. They hunted deer mostly, and I was into coyote blasting. The short rifle, which I naturally named 'Shorty' rode across my lap as I drove, and I could have it up and propped on the steering wheel in half an instant. Some of the repeat guests were always wanting to shoot coyotes with my rifle, to the degree that they preferred it to deer hunting. We did bust a bunch of coyotes, and that old 220 was a laser beam shooter. Decades later it has a new barrel, but still 20 inches.

Yes, get the barrel chopped. There's no joy in dragging around a 26 inch bull barreled rifle for hunting purposes.

I've been thinking of cutting my 26" down to 20" for a while, just never got around to doing it.

Hunt.

I'm getting ready to cut mine from 22" down to 18" and run a suppressor.
