With all the questions about estimating a hog's weight, I'm wondering what classifies as a big hog? I say anything north of 250 is a really big pig.

I lived the third option last week with a 100-125 pound hog and I thought he was a monster zombie pig.

I say about 175-200 is above average...

Where I hunt, around Central Texas, I would agree. 175-200 is big. Anything over 200 is really big.

I see a lot in the 150 - 175 range. A few in the 175 - 200 range. I call them big at 200#. 250s are REALLY big and rare in my book.

Over 250 is definately Monster territory.

I used to think that any boar over 200 lbs was a big boar, and they still are good sized boars. To me now, a big boar is in the 275-300 lb plus range.

Generally speaking, anywhere over 200 lbs is a big boar. If I can't load it in the back of my truck by myself without pulleys, then it is big.

Everyone will have a bit of a different answer based on their experiences.

By and large, I don't think the majority of folks that hunt hogs actually weigh them. I used to not like the measuring method, but DNS has convinced me of the err of my ways. I don't think most folks use either method.

That leads us to the fact that most folks are just taking a WAG at it. I found that most visual guesses are nowhere close and the majority guess way over. I've shot quite a few hogs, but I wouldn't make a significant bet that I can consistently get within 20 lbs..

For me, where I have hunted, I'm thinking the percentage of hogs over 250 is something on the order of 1 or 2%. 200 and up is maybe 5%. 175 and up may push 7-8%, dunno. I get a pretty fair number in the 150-175 range, but by far the the largest percentage would fall in the 100-150 range. Then another chunk at 80-100.

So, Imma say, a really big pig for me is 250 and up. A big pig is over 200.

I agree that most are WAGiing, that many are way off. From what I have seen almost all of them go high. I even watched a professional guide, at a well know ranch, go probably 25% high on a 200# boar. ( I suspect this was to pump up the paying customers.)

I shoot a few pigs. Almost all of the ones killed on my place get hung from a digital scale, even if we are not dressing them out. The scale stays right beside the tractor keys, which gets used to haul the carcases to the Coyote Buffet gully. The only extra effort required is to sling a chain around their neck. Even doing this for the last three or four years, I still get pigs, in all weight ranges, that surprise me. I put a cloth tape around some, and find that a good guess, but there are outliers even when measuring.

And BTW, any boar that I miss or is not recovered, is 300lbs. This IS Texas.

would have ta agree with dfwroadkill ... Mostly hunt WMA for hogs, over the years seeing less hogs & fewer of the 200-250#+ hogs... Last few taken were in the 120#+ range, when ya huntsolo , old & decrepit, & back down in the hollows mile or two, by yourself, by time ya get back ta truck, they big hogs... Edit: Full moon tonight, shining bright, straight over head... Good night for a hunt...

I agree that most people including myself over estimate the weight of a hog. When I first started hunting pigs I claimed several I shot were 300+pound boars. I purchased a scale several years ago and the first pig we weighed was 270 pounds. Myself, along with my lease members all guessed 300-320 pounds when he was being loaded onto the carrier. My best guess as to why we over state a pigs weight is based on lifting or dragging dead weight.

We weigh all of our pigs. I have shot some mature boars with large tusk at 150 pounds and they were solid beast that I would not want to meet in the dark. But to get the WOW actor for us they need to go 200+. If we get one near the 300 mark, the neighbors will come by to see him.

I bought a set of decent 550 lb. game scales to eliminate guesses 4 years ago.
My criteria is simple: If I have to go get the tractor with front end loader, then they qualify as big.

I also keep the scale by the tractor keys.
If they are big enough to get the tractor, I take the scales and digicam!

There is a relationship between how far you draw the hog and how much it weighs, further = more
There is a relationship to the upward incline as well.
If you have a back injury that causes you pain when you drag or move your hog, the weight increase.

Basically, anything that hampers movement of the hog increases its weight.

Oh, and weight goes up with the number of beers you have consumed as well, just like with fish.

In my opinion any hog over 300 lbs. is a big one.

Under 225 with 4"+ of ivory showing above gum line...like killing a 170" deer low fence.

200 is a big hog. Tough to drag out of the woods even with help.
I shot this boar November 8 when I was supposed to be hunting deer.
The land owner estimated 400 lbs, I don't know but the two of use could not pick up one end.
I am 6'2" for scale.
