I lurked here for quite a while and finally registered.

I work for a gunsmith, David Van Horn, so I can make what I want. The rifle is a stainless Remington 700 short action . The cartridge I designed to meet the recent rules change in Michigan to allow pistol caliber rifles in the shotgun zone, I have a friend who lives there, it is a 30-06 case cut to 1.8" with a 44 caliber bullet, I called it 44MLC- my initials. The stock is fiddleback maple, in this picture it can't be seen but it is a straight grip patterned along the lines of a Winchester lever gun. I did 90% of the work on the rifle, even drilling and rifling the barrel.
I used a Hornady 265 grain FTP, rubber tip, this hog went down without taking a step.

Here's a sow I shot before I bought a big set of scales. We guessed her over 400. The man in the picture is 6'6" tall and tips in at 300lbs. She was much bigger than him. What would yall guess her at?

We only found fragments of the bullets and no exit wounds.
It would be considered poor bullet performance but the hogs shot dropped.

Did you shot the pig in Michigan? If so, how prolific is the feral hog population there?

The gun was made to meet the Michigan rules as I have a friend with a farm there but this year I went to TX.

250-300+ Is a big hog in my book

It depends on their food source. I have killed two this past year north of 250 with baby white pearly teeth. Anything close to or north of 300 lbs is big with crops around. I estimate weight by taking length and girth measurements. The one I mentioned earlier had a girth of 49" and baby teeth.

Does it fit in the oven? Yes, right size. Does it fit in my smoker? Yes, A little over sized. Does it take more than one cooler when quartered? Yes, fair sized hog. Does my jeep drag @$$ when it is loaded on my receiver shelf? Yes, big hog...

Seriously, after 200lbs every pound looks like two, and after 300 each pound looks like three. This is true for both feral and domestic hogs. We always take bets on weights before we string then up and between hunting hogs for ages and raising hogs I have developed an eye over the years. But I tell you I get caught underestimating a fair bit because even with thick hair a lean 250lb wild hog looks like a 200lb fat barnyard hog.

I am impressed when I see a wild hog over 300lbs. Especially knowing what a 300lb hogs feed bill is.

Honestly 200+ is a big pig. Most people's 200 or 300 pound hogs are 120-150. See it all the time. I've seen all sizes and have been wrong plenty of times but have gotten pretty good over the years at judging them. Plus or minus a few! I shot one this evening. The pics I took didn't do it justice at all. He was solid. Pigs have diff statures just like people. I've seen long pigs that look bigger than they are weigh a fraction of what they looked. And seen what looked like a 150-160 pound pig hit 220. Some are just built stout. My statement above about 200-300 pigs only weighing 120-150 usually comes from rookie or novice hunters that I've guided before and very little to no experience. All dead ones are trophys in my book. With all this rain pigs have been pushed out of the bottoms around me and are wrecking shop on my land and my parents land.

I have learned that most people underestimate distance and overestimate weight. The best thing to do is drill yourself. I am constantly drilling myself on distances & weights. Pick a bush, guess the distance, then step it off. Same goes for weight. Judge a pig on the hoof, then after it's down, then put him/her on the scale. Just like judging the length of a fish, if you practice regularly you will get pretty good at it. You trap pigs too? Next time, judge their weight at the trap big or small...every time. Pull them out live or dead and put them on the scale. Practice. Yes most people overestimate pig weights.

cool thread... Unless a hog tis put ta scale, the weight tis just an estamite... Tis more inta the en & chillen... Think most would agree a dead hog weigh's in more than a live hog...

I agree in that most who guess a weight are way off to the high side. I measure anything I think is over 180 lbs and found that when I've checked with a scale it's with in 10 lbs. It's also in the camera angle as show below. All 3 pigs were 260 lbs. For me a good sized hog is 200-250 and a big pig is over 250.

Anything over 200 for sure, but you know there big when you can't get em in the truck lol had to drag the spotted one he was definately over 300
The one on the truck was 270, I've got tons of other pics of 200 pounders but when you have to ask yourself when you see em at night, is that a cow lol then that's a big one

This I think qualified.

To me a big boar is anything over 250lbs. A big sow is over 200lbs. I've shot many boars over 250 and 2 sows over 200. Biggest boar is estimated at around 364lbs +/- 10lbs. That was with the heart girth formula: Pig Weight= 10.1709x Heart Girth (56inches) minus 205.7492 which came out to a total of 363.8212lbs. That will probably be the biggest hog I will ever kill. I will post pictures later of him and a little story behind him as well.

Formula:

Length: A little over 60 inches snout to butt

Girth: ~56 inches

He stuck out a couple inches off the sides of my 2001 F150 truck bed

Had a huge Skull as well with some nice cutters. (I don't have a picture of the european mount with me.)

Shot these opening am of deer season this year. I guess the first at 225 and the second at 300ish maybe larger. We had to take a second look to make sure it was not a cow behind the feeder

FIFY english got Dminus, how ever did spend time, hauling livestock, guessing weights at sale barn, & worked with a vet, up for a few hog rodeo's before me teens... have back packed few that size back out from down in the hollows in me younger days..
