whats a good sharpener to get at say academy or somewhere like that. Just hunting knives. Looking to get better at it. Just wondering. Nothing better than a good sharp knife.

I use my bench grinder to get them sharp and my steel to keep them sharp.

Buy a cheap 4 rod lansky box. It's all you need.

A good pack of sandpaper with grits from 100 through 600 and a good flat surface. Research "scary sharp sharpening system".

Lansky system if you want to learn angles and bevels (compound angles) or a Harbor freight 1" belt sander with belts from 80 grit to ? Micron (whatever you can find) if you want a more professional setup.
In the kitchen I use a chefs choice diamond hone (hybrid) and can do utility or compound angle honed edge depending on what my knife prefers.

My 2x72 grinder. The work sharp is great after you sold a knife, I don't like how it scratches the blade.

I probably have just about every sharpening gizmo around and they all work. But, I'm kinda old school. Out of a dozen or so stones, my go to is an old Arkansas that is now concave on both sides. I use light oil and finish with a steel and then a strop. Just about any piece of leather will work once you figure it out. On junk steel nothing works very well.

Thanks for all the great advice guys. I have a few of the Moore maker diamond rod green handle sharpeners. Not bad. Probably better once I learn angles a little better. Nothing like a new sharp knife,I just want that on all my knives. I have a few I love and just want to do them justice. Plus sharp knives work way better!!!

I love the Work Sharp, many uses. Northern Tool, Lewisville, has for $80, comes with 3 different belt grit.

Plain ole $2.50 carborundum (sp?) stone for me. Tried a lot of the specialist sharpening kits and my edge seems to hold better and easier to achieve with the stone. Consistent angle is the trick.

Real happy with my Ken Onion model of the WorkSharp! Over the years I think I've tried everything to put and keep a good edge on my knives, and for the money, and for the time I need to invest in the sharpening process, I'll take the WorkSharp every time. All my other sharpening stones and gadgets are collecting dust since I got my WS. Only time I'll break one of them out is when I know I'm going to be in the field for an extended period of time and may have a need to touch up an edge while I'm out.

How much of a purist can he really be if he doesn't even know that he is using a leather strop not a "strap."

Lansky system is the best I have found for those who are new to really sharpening a blade. Once you learn to hold an angle, nothing beats a good set of diamond stones of varying grits, finishing with a leather strop.

If you go with the Lansky, be sure to buy the diamond set. Makes sharpening those hard steels much easier.

My WorkSharp should be in Wednesday! Super excited to start sharpening.

I think you'll be really happy with it! Be sure to follow the instructions!! I tended to be a bit "heavy handed" at first, putting too much pressure on the knife. Heavy isn't needed; light is right!!

Keep a moore make diamond flat stone in a custom leather sheath I made for it. I can sharpen most any knife in a minute or so.
