I use a Lansky system with Course and Fine diamond and Soft and Hard Arkansas. Then finish with a Strop board with White rouge on one side and Red rouge on the opposite.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

Once you get most of the blade sharp....continue to draw it thru exerting minimal pressure at first then ending up at the tip with most of the pressure. One of the reasons is that you will run out of motion before you get to the tip if you don't do it like that.

Billybob I will sure try that.... Frustrating because the sharpener will get things sharp and they stay sharp!

standard...It is just for field use. I'll put it on the worksharp if I'm in the barn.

The work sharp has been a miracle for keeping my knives and tools sharp. In addition, for my case trapper particularly, I finish the edge with my smith's ceramic sharpener. Use this in between each use as well.. just a few hits on each side does the trick. Keeps my trapper shaving sharp! Work Sharp Smiths 3-in-1

Real happy with my Ken Onion model of the WorkSharp! Over the years I think I've tried everything to put and keep a good edge on my knives, and for the money, and for the time I need to invest in the sharpening process, I'll take the WorkSharp every time. All my other sharpening stones and gadgets are collecting dust since I got my WS. Only time I'll break one of them out is when I know I'm going to be in the field for an extended period of time and may have a need to touch up an edge while I'm out. My WorkSharp should be in Wednesday! Super excited to start sharpening. I think you'll be really happy with it! Be sure to follow the instructions!! I tended to be a bit "heavy handed" at first, putting too much pressure on the knife. Heavy isn't needed; light is right!! Practice with cheap kitchen knives till you get the hang of it.. that's no joke, you'll ruin a blade with one quick hit of the wrong pressure! forgot to mention that in my previous post! Also, I never use the course belts, you could hone a hammer down to a sharp edge pretty quick with that thing!
