I was in the same boat. Turns out that crossbows are all geared towards larger folks in that they have a pretty high cocking weight.

Look at the new Excalibur Micro. It is not nearly as wide or long or heavy as their other models. Still a fast shooting, hard hitting xbow. http://excaliburcrossbow.org/catalog/crossbow/micro_335 You can get a handcrank cocking aid also. With any crossbow you have to be very careful of your hands and fingers around the string when shooting. This would be a bow he(or anyone else) will be able use in the future.

After seeing a few recent crossbow injuries I suggest getting one with a fore grip.

I was in the same boat. Turns out that crossbows are all geared towards larger folks in that they have a pretty high cocking weight. A simple law of Physics. A shorter string length and heavier tension will combine to require greater cocking strength. Still, it would seem a youngster, or even an adult for that matter, would be able to use the rope method with both arms and the foot as an anchor to set a crossbow. It also brings to mind the same question as to the safety in giving a youngster a firearm. That is, why give them a deadly weapon they're too young to handle on their own? In my generation, a kid was given a firearm when they were old enough to carry and handle it safely It.

Parker makes a crossbow that is somewhat designed for smaller framed folks. Can't recall the name right now, but you might check out their line.
That said, I have to agree with Dan on the safety aspect. IMO six is a bit young for a weapon that can hurt/kill.
