Well, thick enough a .40 FMJ didn't go through. I shot the biggest sow (125 lbs) between the eyes with this from 4 feet, it fell out of its skull while I was cleaning it. Another shot to the ear is what finally put her down.

But it did give her one serious headache......I've shot and killed many, many pigs (all sizes) with a single-shot bolt action shooting .22 shorts between the eyes and slightly up to the center of the skull.....all about shot placement....

Oh it knocked that pig out cold for a good 5 mins, when I was finishing up the rest I had to hit her again. Funny you mention the .22, that is what I used last week with less problems than the .40.

Only problem I ran into this weekend was the sow that wasn't in the cage charging me when I walked up. Didn't see her until it was too late, shot her also but she ran off.

Both sows immediately hit the ground, couple minutes later they both started kicking again and had to take one to the ear. I forgot my .22 this weekend so had to rely on the .40. I will say that shooting the pigs last weekend with a suppressed .22 caused way less panic in the trap. First round out of the .40 and they went bat sh!t crazy.

40S&W usually drops them for me on the first shot. That is crazy that it didn't penetrate. I generally use hollow point ammunition for dispatching pigs, might be the difference. Might have also been a lightly charged round too. I shot some Tulammo rounds that had no powder. If the cartridge didn't have full powder charge, it might not have the penetrating power.

I figured the FMJ would have been better at punching a hole in their skulls. I was shooting Winchester 165 gr. rounds.

Yeah I would think that the FMJ would penetrate deeper too. I mainly use HPs, so I can't say what a FMJ would do to a pig. I wouldn't think Winchester would let a bad round slip through.
