Well the year started out well for us. We have not hit the rut yet and we have taken a 196 and a 194. We took this deer this morning to add to the list - we have never seen this deer on trail camera before. 23 inches inside spread and scored 186 B&C

Bucks like this happen to us on a fairly regular basis. Protein and cottonseed feeders everywhere and most covered with cameras. Then deer like this show up and to our knowledge have never been in a protein pen. The only rationale I can think of is some deer are averse to pens and will not enter.

Do your neighbors feed and manage like you do? I was hunting a 5700 acre HF ranch that had protein feeders out and pens. Ran TC every Sept and Oct and still had bucks that were never seen in any of the pens. They were killed away from any of the pens on corned roads while hunting out of tripods.

yes - the entire ranch is 16K acres and we have 9K - adjoining ranches all manage. This particular deer we saw live last year and then of course this year. So he hangs in our area but never saw him in a pen on camera. So I suppose he could have been traveling but where we saw and shot him was in middle of our lease. So would be a far travel for him to wander next door. I wonder if some bucks simply never feel comfortable in a pen and don't go there
