I finally caught the time and weather (sort of...) to get back on load development for my new-to-me Creedmoor. My original development notes are here:

Previous Post

Thanks to all for the suggestions - I loaded up a batch of 44.1 and 44.4 grains to try. The wind was at 10:30 around 5-10 MPH when I tried the 44.1. Pretty decent group, average velocity of 28??, ES of 27, SD of 13 (I think) after 4 rounds.

I then had to help my FIL load the wheat drill. By the time we got done, winds were gusty at 10-20 MPH. The 4-shot 44.4 group was opened up by a "flyer" from just under 3/8" CTC to just over 1/2" CTC. Primers were a little flatter, but no sticky bolt or ejector swipes. Chrono was reading all over the place, but my dinky tripod had it bouncing and twisting all over the place... so I am not putting much stock into the readings.

I will load up a batch of the 44.4 grains and stretch it out a little to find actual trajectory. I am blown away at the lack of recoil that this round has - truly comparable to a 243. This may very well be the perfect round for Texas hunting for the recoil-sensitive shooter. Thanks again for all of the feedback.

You bought 12000 Berger VLD hunters...My Gawd Man...hope you got the bulk deal on that smile I'm still working on load for my 6.5 SE. I found charge that grouped 1" at 50yds but opened up to 2" at 100. I figured its the COAL. I gotta get some gear, like COAL gauge for using these Bergers!

No, but Chad did. He reloads for a living and shoots competitively, so I bet those 12K won't spoil.

On your Swede, try 140s of your choice and a decent dose of IMR4831. I've never seen a Swede that didn't like that combo. Some swear by R22, but I have never tried it. Depending on your rifle's throat, try 0.000-0.030 off of the lands if your magazine will allow. If not, seat them as long as you can with 100% feeding reliability.

Thanks for the info ckat.
I have been using 43.5 grains of H4350 and just sitting them to 3.150 COAL. They work fine on the CZ 550 FS 6.5 SE.
I cant do much till I get the gauge for the proper bullet sitting! What amazed me was the 120 Nosler Spitzers did so well beating out the Bergers by half the group size, but then the Bergers are very sensitive I can see to seating depth!??
That And I'm using RCBS seating die,not a Redding with a Custom Berger VLD seating stem! Not yet anyway got them for hunting not long distance!

ckat - I'm not crazy with your ES/SD numbers but if it's shooting good and you don't plan to really stretch it out then it won't make a hill of beans difference. It could be something as simple as switching to a different primer. My Creedmoor liked BR4's (of course one of the most expensive) better than any of the rest...Fed match was close but BR4's were best. I agree completely with your Creedmoor assessment...great round.

RR - you can take an empty case and seat a bullet long...then steel wool the bullet to make it all shiny and smooth...then put in the gun and attempt to close the bolt (guessing if you seat long you won't be able to) then pull it out...notice the rifling (lands) marks on the bullet and steel wool those off...then seat the bullet .002 deeper and repeat process until you can close bolt and not see any rifling/lands marks on the bullet. You'll know within .002 of when it is touching. Most straight VLD's like to be touching the rifling/lands (not all guns but as a general rule).

Can use the steel wool or use a match and blacken the bullet with soot and get where the lands are by the same method as Judd described. Was doing that long before I ever heard of gauges for it. The match method was in the first reloading manual I ever bought (it was a Speer from the late 70s)

A Sharpe works also.

Often the long VLD bullets do not play well when seated into the lands if trying to fit into the magazine of you gun and have to be fed single shot. For that case Berger recommends trying .04, .08 and .12 jump and can usually find a good load around those bullet jumps with accuracy that will fit in the magazine.
