I leave the edge thick so I can grind post heat treat. Plus I need room to put my mark. So the grind will be a little higher.

I've been through some files, rasps and industrial hacksaw blades. I'm just not getting it on hollow grinding.

Hollow grind — a knife blade which has been ground to create a characteristic concave, beveled cutting edge. This is characteristic of straight razors, used for shaving, and yields a very sharp but weak edge which requires stropping for maintenance.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grind It's a choice, some customers, see a hollow grind as the sign of a sharp knife.

Mike, I'm free handing it without a jig. Just not getting both sides the same. I'm pretty well convinced that it's an arcane science. I get one fairly close and totally screw up the next one.

A couple of days ago I was paying too much attention to the grind and took a pretty decent gouge out of a knuckle from a 36g belt. Leather gloves don't help much with a aggressive belt.

I start with a 60-80 grit, 36 is to aggressive imo. It's all about pressure, I also leave the edge thick and grind post h/t just dip the blank in water to keep it cool.

I'm trying a lot of things but find out that patience is a virtue that I need to cultivate. I pick up a lot of junk files and rasps at flea markets for very little $.

Kev, I like the 36G Norton SG Blaze belts for roughing out a handle. I only use craft wood. I've used plastics but prefer wood. I use that 36G for the butt end of every handle because an aggressive belt doesn't burn the wood. Then I very carefully use 3 different grits to finish prior to hand sanding with 3 or 4 grits. 3 or 4 coats of Waterlox and I'm done. I have 4 1" sanders.

I'm doing 8 sets of steak knives for XMAS. I'm buying the Green River blades from Jantz because there is no way that I could make enough nice serrated steak knives. Certainly no way I could do 64. They're hung together with 5/32 brass pins and Devcon 5 minute Epoxy. I ordered 80 blades and 20 are on back order. Right now I'm 2 blades short on what I need to finish this deal. I found some butcher blocks and got 8 of them in. By the time I finish this project, I'll have about $1,400 "invested" in materials, etc. I'll have about 1.5 hours in each completed knife. Yessir, it's a PITA and I told my Wife never again.

When this ends, I can get back to playing with steel.
