Been doing some research on this sight/scope, one thing that I can't seem to get a clear answer on, how far out can you acquire a target, what is your farthest comfortable shooting distances? How well does it work at scanning a field? All to be done at night.

In daytime you can see as far as you can see.
Nighttime will depend on the auto dimming of your unit and what IR torch you select.

JMO YMMV

Doesn't the 3-12 xsight come with an 850nm illuminator?

it does but you will want a more powerful ir for more distance, the one that comes with it is good to about 50 yds max.

What ir would you recommend? Distance of 200-250 yds.

I can see over 300 yards with mine and the aftermarket IR I use.
When scanning the field I use the app on my phone, put the gun on a bi-pod and scan looking at the phone for a much cleaner picture.
