It's a good cartridge for some things, and lousy for others. You haven't said anything about what you are wanting to do with it.
I used a 17HMR as a companion for walks around my farm in the mornings, and it worked well for the type of varmints I found, at the kind of ranges I tended to encounter them at.
Have you thought about what you want to do with the rifle?

One of my favorite cartridges. Very accurate and fun to shoot. Great on small varmint. Does not like windy conditions.

With no wind and good glass you can write your initials on a target if you choose.
93VR17 is a machine!
Pass the gravy.

I would rather buy a 223.

I love it - within its limitations. It is a super varmint gun up to about 150 if the wind isn't blowing.
But because of its limitations I eventually went back to the .308 as my primary truck gun.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I have never detected a ricochet occurring with my 17HMR. - That's a nice feature if you are hunting near settled areas.
Kind regards, charlesb

GREAT ROUND... More energy to 200 than a 22 mag... Hit like a HAMMER.... no felt recoil, and ammo very readily available, especially compared to 22 mag
Sombody smells like fried borritos...

I like mine. Within it's limitations it's a FUN round.

My wife bought me one a few years ago for Christmas. Its a 917V I think. I kinda like it. I put a Leupold VX-III on it that possibly cost more than the rifle but with that I was able to work around ammo and find some that shoots in the 1/2"-3/4" range on a calm day with no wind. The wind really messes with it though but its fun just to shoot stuff with it.

Can't beat it for squirrels. Other than that I didn't find a whole lot mine was good for and ended up trading it off.

I got a savage 93R17 BTVSS about a .month or so ago for around $475 and I REALLY like it.
I've shot .22 my whole life and up until the savage you couldn't get me not to carry my 572 fieldmaster. I bought a new scope for it at the same time I got the savage and ask me how many times I've used it, lol.
17HMR is a tad on the loud side, so there's no easy plinking like with .22. That being said I will also agree that hits like a hammer considering it's a 20 gr bullet. I used mine last week on a javelina at about 30 yards right on the collar and the bullet did quite a number. Dropped what I would estimate around 50~55lb boar in his tracks. No fuss, no groans.
That same shot with a .22 would not have dropped him right there. I've shot the limit for the past 15 years at least with different rimfires on some big boys and the only other time I've seen them drop that hard was with a 22WMR in the same area and .22 LR with a direct brain shot.
Savage accutrigger is exceptional. I shot an easy 3/4" 5 shot group at 50 yards even with my booty $50 simmons on it. Can't wait to get a silver scope that's actually decent mounted.

I too have the Savage and love it. Consistently shoots MOA or better out to 150. I have shot it to 200, but results went downhill fast. I've killed a couple of fair sized hogs with it, but that was just because it was all I had at the time. Anything from a squirrel up to a coyote is dead meat if it gets within 150 yards.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.
