I'm more of a covey counter. How about you?

I love to watch my dogs work tight sticking singles. There's nothing like a giant covey rise, but I also love to see the excitement of my dogs when I kick around in front of their nose and they stay steady till the bird flushes. It's like they're saying "I know that sucker is in there and I'm not moving till he gets out."

I just like all parts of it. That said, I wouldn't hunt down more than one or two singles the way things are.

In the old days we hunted singles now not so much. With a couple of good dogs a covey can be wiped out fast if you pursue the singles. We went way to many years with no quail to shoot them all the first year.

By the way we had 31 coveys in three hours Sunday. What a year! Reminded me of 1982.
The ranch we are on has set an 8 bird limit and I agree with it. Also no single chasing.

I love it all. Nothing like walking up on a pointed covey exploding at your feet and good dog work on single birds is entertainment in the first degree. I have let my dog power go low because I truly thought it was about over but this blessing of abundant birds has rejuvenated me and will likely make my so so dogs into what they should be. I am a 65 year old kid at this point!

After the initial covey rise, if we see where the birds landed and have an idea of the direction they went and it's not too far, we will pursue them to see if we can get a couple more birds. If it's a small covey, they flew too far, we don't know which direction they might have gone, they crossed into property we don't have access to, etc., then we'll continue hunting other coveys. Lots to consider.

This year we can't go 100 yards without finding a new covey. I was walking through a sunflower field during dove season and busted two large coveys not 50 yards from one another. This year will be even better than last year.

I never chase singles, I will let a young dog work them and if point go bang when they flush. Finished by first hunt of year 2 days good to great dog work day three the worst dog work in 25 years. Averaged 4 coveys per hour of hunting time. did not hunt Wednesday since wind was 25 gusting to 40

Tigger
If it isn't white it is not a birddog.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

How many dogs are you running Tigger?

Whose found the most birds, yours or Giant's lone dog?

I didn't know that was your dog. I saw her in the back of his truck last weekend. Good looking little dog.

I love the action of hunting singles but I usually only take one bird per covey find regardless of whether it's on the covey rise or a single. Fortunately I'm a bad shot.
