I just bought a German 98 mauser. The action and bolt are great. The rifle shoots real bad. Yes I cleaned it.
Looking for a good gunsmith around DFW to re barrel this rifle. Thanks

Sounds like a good reason to build a custom if you aren't attached to the nostalgia. wink

Good action. What does the rifling look like? Also, what ammo did you use?

Should shoot 198-200 gr. well.

If its all original I would think twice before I replaced the barrel. Original German Mausers go for a premium, especially if they are all matching. If its not, go for it.

I love my 8x57mm's. I think they have an unwarranted reputation as being inaccurate, probably due to shooting too light of bullets. Most (except for Turkish I believe) were designed to shoot 196-198 grain projectiles.

I shot 170gr remington round nose soft point down the pipe. The bolt, action and barrel have same serial #. The stock looks like it's been sporterized and trimed, very badly. Yes I heard 190 to 200gr is the best ammo. The rifling looks to be in good condition. The bullets hit a little left of bullseye from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock all in a 20" straight line.

bang I bought one a few weeks back, "sporterized" Barrel cut back, stock cut down, bent bolt and a "Gibsons" 4x scope on See-through rings so the safety works. It has roundy round things in it,but a very dark bore. I'm thinking maybe another 6.5 x 55 SWEDE. Because the bolt head is to big to make it a 6.5 Grendel!
BUT after that last build... It would be better $ spent calling Horizon Firearms!

I have a 7mm mauser I can't get to shoot either. 6" groups at 59 yards.

Domestically made commercial ammo is generally downloaded and underpowered in 8mm Mauser due to folks shooting the .323" bullet in a '96 action .318 bore. Your '98 is .323" and will do best with full power European loads (Sellier and Bellot, etc.) in 196-198 grain loads. And those rifles can REALLY shine if you handload for them (the ones I have are SHOOTERS with a full power load behind a Sierra Pro Hunter 185 grain .323 bullet.) DON'T write it off after shooting it with just one load.

I know you were addressing my post, but I shot both sellier and bellot and coreloct in my 1893 mauser

Yeah, I don't have a lot of experience with the 7x57 but that's an awesome round. I've played with the 8mm in '98's a LOT. Like the 7mm, the 8mm is a REALLY good medium sized game cartridge. With a handloaded 185 grain Pro Hunter bullet it's hell on the hogs. Excellent deer cartridge as well. The 8mm's in a '98 action tend to be sensitive to seating depth and have LONG throats. Varying the depth tends to really help find the accuracy potential in these rifles.

Yep

The original loads of the 7x57mm Mauser had a 175 grain round nose bullet going 2300 fps. Later they went to a 154 grain Spitzer. So, you may want to try a few loads with a couple heavy projectiles before writing the old war horse off.

I concur what tth_40 said about long throats. That and barrel twist rates are why most military Mausers like heavy bullets: they are longer.

I have a custom 243 Win made on a Mauser 98 action in the shop now I am working on loads for. I have shot several Mausers before. This rifle shoots well, but the trigger is very odd. It is tuned and lightened up. But when I fire it, it has a squishy, soft feel to it, with a long creep at the end. And the main thing I notice is the lag time from when the trigger is pulled to the actual firing of the round. Most rifles you pull the trigger and it goes bang at the same time without a delay. This rifle has a slight lag time or delay to it. The trigger is depressed and the firing pin goes forward, but it takes a slit second for the round to go off. I noticed this big time on this rifle. It actually made it more difficult to shoot well, for a custom precision rifle, that is.

Mausers are not really known for short lock times

Chad, drop a Timney in that rifle and it will improve some, not original but functional
