I'm looking at putting a bar wire fence around my property and I'm curious just how high deer can actually jump?
My feeder pen is made of hog panels and they seem to jump it however I have read in here to not use cattle panels as it may keep deer out.
Just curious how high they can jump.

watched 2 does clear an 8' fence in mills county. As long as they can get the front legs over, the rest of the body follows.

Just curious how high they can jump. If a deer can't clear any thing under 6' it's crippled

Also if your putting up barbed wire they may go through/under.
Hunting hillcountry all my life most fences were sheep and goat netting and deer were used to jumping. At our place now almost all deer I see crossing our perimeter/cross fences which are barbed wire go through/under as apposed to jumping.

I've seen them jump high fence on several occasions. Basic height of 4.5 to 5' is doable.

Will barb wire keep out feral hogs ? No. And hog panels won't keep deer out. Especially if trimmed down or with a large enough pen.

Barbed wire fences are not an issue at all IMO. They are everywhere. They are not a problem at all.
On the feeder pen issue, the real question in your situation is not how high they CAN jump, but how high they WILL jump to get to a feeder.
There is no set answer to this. Depends on the place. Depends on the year.
My deer in east TX don't like fences around feeders. When I put them up, most of them wouldn't jump in. Some would, but many wouldn't. When I hunted in central TX that did not seem to be an issue nearly so much.
The exceptions are bad drought years when they were just hungry period. Then the fences were not an issue.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Yes they can jump taller fences, a taller fence may deter them though as there could be other much easier properties to access. I've seen more deer walk through barb wire fences thanks jump over them. IMO I wouldn't go higher than 4'

Just reminds me of the time me and my youngest were walking to a blind. We jumped this buck and spooked him so bad that he didn't clear a normal 4 ft barbed wire fence. His front legs caught on the top strand and he did a full front flip! Weirdest thing we had ever seen.

I have seen bucks in a pen pushed into corner and literally jump and try to climb over a 10 feet pen. The guy shouldn't have pushed them like he did but they would have gotten over had there not been somebody on the other side scaring them back. Owner was a real nit wit.
On the feeder pens I think the biggest problem with deer not jumping over isn't the height but the circumference (space to land in under the feeder) and/or not needing to jump in to get some corn.

I don't know what they are willing to jump but I was sitting in a 12 foot stand and let an arrow fly. That doe jumped up and I could see eye to eye with her before she hit the ground, spun and jumped the fence. She didn't go far but I'd never seen that before.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

As stated before, if you are stringing barb-wire, no mater how tight, they will go through it, under it, or over it.

Just curious how high they can jump. Leave a really good gap between the two top wires, lessens the chances they hang a leg. We use net wire with two barbs, but one barb is only about an inch off the net, and the top wire is at least 7-8 inches above that.

I am currently thinking of putting a barbed wire fence around my property as a few local people on atvs like to use my land as a riding location. Im not always there so i dont know if it stops with this riding or if hunting is also involded. im thinking of barbed wire fence and no trepeassing signs along with my game cameras.
I have wondered if T posts and a single piece of barbed wire would do the job? it would most deffinety keep a 4 wheeler/razr out.
double or tripple would offer more than i piece however if they want in they can still walk and climb in between
im just trying to say keep out quit driving on my property.

Had to kill a spike one time who had cleared an 8' fence with his front feet, but one back foot went straight into the top square. When he came down the wire twisted around his foot and he hung himself by it, front two feet on the ground. He had been there several hours, he was torn to shreds from trying to get away.

Find where they are entering and put multiple t post 2 feet apart putting up one strand might not be noticeable enough AND could be used to critically injure/decapitate 4 wheeler riders if placed at or above handlebar height. I would not recommend!!! 2 strands as a minimum!

They can jump very high when pressured. But, deer do not like to jump if they can go under instead. Barbwire fences will keep out hogs if you put enough wires, like 7-9 wire barbwire fence like they use for sheep/goats in the Hill Country. I use 49" net wire on any new fence I put in to help slow hogs down but it takes deer a while to learn to jump it. Now they move freely. Young fawns and yearling have trouble learning to jump and are usually the ones that get hung in a fence. If you are only trying to keep out hogs then build a 42" fence. If cattle are around you then a 48" fence is minimum to build. I would worry more about cattle and build my fence to keep them in or out.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?
