My wife is inheriting her grandfathers rifle this weekend. Her dad has it right now and hasn't used in in a few years. He said the recoil isn't bad at all, but what I'm finding is that it's along the lines of a 270Win. I'm going to use the Weatherby brand ammo in 100gr SP, because that's what I can find local right now. My concern is that it's going to recoil too hard for my wife. Any experience with this caliber?

Its like shooting a 26/06 if you ask me. It is a belted magnum so it's burning tons of powder but I love the round. It doesn't kick like a 270. Make sure that the rifle likes that projectile. Mine didn't when I had it but I can't remember what it did like. Being that's a family heirloom, the ammo cost will be worth it.

Does your wife shoot any rifles currently?

One of my great uncles has the exact rifle you are talking about and has hunted with it for a lonnnng time. He's 82 and still uses it, so I'd imagine your wife would be ok with it.

I think it kicks less than my 30-06 with 150 gr federal classics, maybe something along the lines of 25-06 or .260 recoil?

She will be fine recoil wise. My wife has used mine to kill a host of things including oryx. It's actually less recoil then a 270.

Currently she shoots an AR and my Rem 700 in 270win with muzzle break. I figured a good recoil pad and she would be fine

Depends on the shell/ it can be 17.7(.257) vs 16.5(270)
It could light you up compared to a .243(8.8)

And it will heat the barrel quick as heck at the range so limit her to 2-3 to start then wait between. You knew this already tho

I guess this Saturday will be the test. She is excited, I'm hoping that stays after she pulls the trigger

Get one of these just for starters and work up to it. Better safe than sorry.

Hey Big, you/she are really lucky with your new gift!!! Great rifle.

I think the caliber is perfect for her. The only problem you might have is the stock fit. It might be a little "long" LOP for her

It is very difficult to get a great cheek weld and correct eye relief while in a cramped deer blind where the windows are "always" too high, I found this all out this weekend with my McWhorter McMillan stock. It fits me great when I'm "on the bench" I sat on 2 boat cushions , worked great.

Even if it recoils too much for her with full bore ammo, you can easily load it down to something she can easily handle without altering the gun. Im sure chad could do it if you don't load your own or have someone else that could do it.

Ironically most women have a longer length of pull then you think. They usually have a longer neck also. My wife's shot gun is ridiculously long

I would say its right on par with a .270win; I've owned and shot both extensively and found that both kids and small stature women handle it just fine.

Having said that I would NOT put a muzzle break on that rifle and simply start with a good limbsaver(or other) recoil pad and that would be a great time to have the stock shortned if need be.

FYI the best all around load I found for big bodied deer and hogs is the 100gr TSX and if your wife is keeping her shooting range down to 250yds or less the 117gr round nose lead tip puts animals down like thors hammer!

Regardless of whether she shoots it or not, it won't be leaving her possession, sorry smirk

I like to tell people, if Jesus shot a rifle, it would be a mark V in .257

I think that highly of them

Well she is in love with it. Said it kicked hard, but she could hunt with it. She kept all the shots in the 1 inch circle bullseye.
