I have a lab with a real bad ear. It's all red and looks agitated. Took a look at it and there is a dark brown liquid coming from his inner ear also. Does anyone have a recipe for something that would help him?

My black lab use to get the same thing, took a visit to vet for drops to get the initial infection under control. After that, just treat it with the ear stuff you buy at petco or wherever. I would just tilt her head, fill it up, massage it and then gently clean it with a cotton ball. Could always try cleaning it twice a day and see if it gets better, but I would bet itll take prescription drops to get it to a manageable level. Oh how I miss that dog, but I dont miss cleaning her ears at all!

My old Yellow lab had bad ears. Take your lab to the vet and get the meds. Ask for the blue ear wash. Every time you know the lab gets ears wet. Wash them out with the blue ear wash. Saved me many trips to the VET. Nice to have a VET for a friend

Also, start giving it a spoon full of yogurt with one of it's meals everyday. But Baylor is giving the best solution for the fix, YellowDog and my advice are for maintenance.

If it is infected (sounds like it is) you will have to get antibiotics and antibiotic ointment to get rid of it, then once it's gone, every other day and anytime they have been swimming, pour a mix of 1/3 Alcohol, 1/3 vinegar & 1/3 peroxide in the ears, shouldn't have anymore problems.

I have a female setter with bad ears similar to what you describe. I tried to all the home remedies to no avail. I took her to my vet and he squeezed a white paste down her ears with something similar to a big cattle syringe. He also placed her on antibiotics. I could see a difference in 3 days and completely cleared in 1 week. I continued the drugs for her for another 3 weeks and I think I now have it under control. Vet said all of this is caused by a yeast infection in the ear and food allergies. I took her off foods that were beef or chicken based and started her on Purina One Lamb and Rice. The results from the last 45 days have been amazing. Clear ears, healthy coat of hair. no infection on her body, no runny eyes, etc. She was a mess just that long ago. Also, another one of my hunting buddies told me that by giving the dog an iron pill a day would help according to his Vet. I started giving her 65mg twice a day of straight iron. All I can say is that she has nearly got her look back and it is beautiful compared to where she was during the summer months.

Use a mixture of 50% alcohol and 50% white vinegar for cleaning ears. The alcohol dries up the water and the vinegar changes the ph in the ear which eliminates the yeast infection.

My yellow lab had an ear issue when he was just shy of a year old. He was shaking his head and scratching at it a lot. When I looked at it, it looked like brown sugar was coated on the inside of his ear and it smelled horrible. Google said it might be mites, which would have been bad. Vet said it was a yeast infection, cleaned it out and gave me some medicine. He also said I needed to change his food to something that included no chicken (basically, he has a food allergy). Once a year, I have to give him some of the leftover medicine because his ear gets irritated, but nothing like that first time.

You said brow liquid, so it doesn't sound like the same thing, but it might maybe be food related, also.
