Hi everyone,

My fiancé and I recently purchased 36 acres in Bandera county. The location we're in has a LOT of competition, everyone hunts here, so I wanted to get the jump on a very nice 8 point that had been showing up on our camera. He had been coming at perfect hours... 7-8 AM and 6-7 PM. Our blind is roughly 80 yards from the feeder so we placed a pop up about 30 yards from it in order for me to get a bow shot on him. Unfortunately, he took one look at that thing and disappeared. It occurred to me, why not just corn closer to the regular blind?! So we took the pop up down after about a week of no show. Sure enough, he started coming back... only now it is at 1 -3 AM ish. The pop up has been down since almost the start of bow season and he hasn't come back in daylight hours since. So my question is, did I completely screw myself over? Now that rifle season is here everyone and their mamma is throwing corn (I hear 2 or 3 other people's feeders kick off while in my blind, when before I heard one.) So that compounds the issue that there are more feeders available to him.

Any ideas how I can push him into returning during shooting hours? I'm considering upping the value of the feed (golden nuggets and alfalfa) and maybe running my UTV up there around midnight to discourage him coming at those times. Bad idea, good idea, any ideas? laugh thanks very much in advance.

PS, sorry if this is in the wrong spot. First poster here.

welcome Put you a bow blind up in the best tree closer to the feeder using the wind to your advantage. Corn closer to the tree where you want to shoot him at. If he made the weekend he might come into your feeder again. If you can sneak a hunt in the middle of the week it might help you connect on him.

They are spooked now, all of a sudden people are driving across the property at 6am and never were there before. The deer aren't even eating the corn at my feeder now due to my goofball neighbor. Older deer aren't that stupid.

Congrats on your purchase.

Their world changes on the Friday night before opening day. All of the new traffic and activity has them spooked, on a small place that is surrounded by other small paces with hundreds of hunters with the same activity it sounds like they went nocturnal.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the suggestions and warm welcome. Sorry I haven't replied in so long... Y'all know how deer season is laugh week day hunt at 3 PM finally did the trick! It was thanksgiving day so nobody else has been up there that day. Ended up bagging a buck even nicer than the one I had been waiting for, and hadn't seen on my camera. Been in a much better mood since!

True words!

Excuse my goofy face, I was pretty amped up laugh

Wasn't the shot I really wanted, had to take a frontal shot (Marlin 3030 lever action with a Simmons scope older than I am :D) but this guy was really skittish and actually not coming into the feeder. He peeked his front half out of the tree line, sniffing and licking his nose. Looked RIGHT into the blind, good thing I had already gotten my rifle up as I had seen a smaller 8 point walk thru but couldn't take an ethical shot so let him go. As he was lifting his front leg to turn and run off I took the frontal shot... he only went about 30 yards. I am pretty danged happy with him!

Thank y'all! He does have some nice dark antlers on him. With as heavily hunted as these small land parcels are and how late we started putting up feeders/thinned brush etc., I was really excited when he popped up!

Just remember one thing, theres a reason why you only see mature big bucks on cameras,
at 1,30 in the morning! they wise up quickley, or unless you stay in the blind past dark and
see what patterns your area!

Im near brenham tx, had 11 or 12 pt coming at 3 then 4am and sometimes, 10pm at the
protein feeder all year round. Never once saw him, last 3 yrs he's been around. Has a one
mark on right side of his throat easy to spot, But not this year, think a local bow hunter tagged
him.....

We'll just settle for a deformed unbranched antler buck this year i guess...... plenty to choose
from there.....

Tip on the blind, get off the ground, too much scent stays at ground level, make or find
a tripod stand about 10 or 12 ft off the ground. you will notice the results.....

hunt/ cook safe....

Thanks! Haha, I was so amped up I couldn't relax a muscle! And that was after letting him lay down for an hour just in case. Anyway, that's why I have the "deer in the headlights" look laugh

Hells bells, I'm still excited! Is it normal to look at the same pics of your buck several times a day? I think I'm going to change my phone lock screen to him, LOL

Hogflyer, I think you're definitely right about elevation. Same wind direction, same scent away, and I would have deer bust me (always some old long necked doe!) in the pop up. Finally got this guy from the tower stand, and really all the wildlife (covered up in foxes, roadrunners, pigs) seem to be much less aware of it. It's definitely colder up there, but I will lose my toes to frostbite if it means I can get a nice buck laugh

Sorry about the trash buck selection, but they're never in short supply are they?

If you have a field photo, have it blown up and put it by your mount when it comes home.

One last photo because I can't help myself.... Unfortunately it started raining pretty good when I went to recover him so I couldn't get any really nice photos.

Western, this guy actually had never shown up on either camera! He just showed up on Thanksgiving for (from what I can tell) the first time.

Also, would y'all count that tiny kicker off his right brow tine as a point? I can technically hang a ring on it... but man is it a nub... not sure if I should call him a 10 or 11.

Just me, but I'd call him a 10 with a "character point", but you call it whatever you want, great buck either way. Still cant get over how nice those dark antlers are!

BTW, you sure put a lot of pressure on your fiance grin
