I was looking at a Shultz & Larsen 7X61 S&H. It ran through my mind that although it's probably easier just load for the 7x61 but it seems that it would be fairly easy to be just rechamber it to 7mm RM. Does anyone know if that's possible. I found where someone said that a 7RM would feed but the bolt wouldn't quite close. I also found some mention that the rifling twist kind of limits it to 160 gr class bullets and others that report using 175 gr.

Early models had a 1:12 twist, later models were changed to 1:10. I don't think it worth the expense to rechamber even if it's possible. Either keep it original, or sell it.

I did find my answer, it can be done, the COL is only 1mm shorter than 7RM. Basically the 7x61 brass is rapidly disappearing, the rifles are extremely high quality, forming dies are $167 and loading dies about $100. How much more would rechambering be? I also found out that they came in 1 in 14, 1 in 12, and 1 in 10. The 1-10 and 1-12 are useful the 1-14 not so much the 1-14 restricts the rifle pretty much to 140 gr bullets. It's been years since I reloaded and I'm not really inclined to start again hence the question. There are a very few standard caliber rifles floating around, so if I were to get one, I just might get one in 7x61 and have it rechambered. A better solution is to buy one that has already been done. I saw one listed that sold for less than $500.

I realize the brass issue, but something as uncommon as a 7x61 seems like a shame to rechamber.

I did some analysis when I bought mine. The reforming dies run about $185 and will allow you to easily convert 7mm RM brass to the S&L. The minor down side to the conversion is that the brass thus formed has slightly less case capacity than the Norma factory 7x61 Super brass, and your loads must be correspondingly adjusted. I picked up ordinary FL dies on eBay for $45, and just picked up a back up set for only $32, so the dies are reasonable if you're patient. Brass is readily available through the major online sellers for about $40/25. While not inexpensive, 100 pieces of brass should last you for years, and the Norma 7x61 brass has an excellent reputation for good quality.

The S&L bolt action rifles are rear locking and have a reputation for stretching brass when loaded to max levels. If you want to max out the 7x61, you're probably better off getting the case forming dies. I have several 7mm magnums including a 7mm Ultra, and feel no need to run my rifle with max loads, so just buying the factory brass made more sense to me. YMMV, of course.

My 1:12 twist Schultz and Larsen M60 in 7x61 S&H (aka 7x61 Super).

TWM I think that sentiments such as yours are why rifles that have been rechambered sell for about 60% of what an untouched example does. I found a chart that indicates 1-10 twist should be OK for all but the longest and heaviest bullets, the 1-12, up to 150 gr not over 1.01 in long. The 1-14 twist on some early examples would be limited to about 129 gr bullets. Schultz & Larsen sold about 20,000 rifles in the United States, better than 90% of them were in 7x61, there probably were an equal number of customs. Among the others, are other obsolete calibers like, the 308&358 Norma Magnums. Given the high quality finish of the rifles, rechambering looks like a pretty viable option, the 1-14 would need to be rebarreled. If rebarreling then 300&338 WM com into play. (note the 308 Norma Mag would not be a candidate to rechamber to 300WM)

Don't forget that they also made rifles in .378 Weatherby caliber. I missed an auction on one a number of years ago because I found a "can't-pass-up" deal on a Gary Reeder revolver. The revolver ended up being a poor fit for me, so I sold it and kicked myself for missing out on the S&L .378, until a couple of years ago when I found and purchased a much nicer .378.

From what I could find out the 56J was available in 30-06 and the the 65 and 65 DL in 270/30-06 along with the Norma and Weatherby magnums. From my research there probably were less than 1000 common caliber rifles imported. I do know that the 56J was available in Europe in 6.5x55.

I've read that a M70 Winchester cost $104 and the S&L rifle cost $265 back at the time of importation. It was always a premium rifle so I would expect the production numbers to be quite limited for some of the calibers.

Here's the article from which I got those numbers:

That's a gorgeous rifle, syncerus.

I have a love for limited and odd 7mm guns. Have a special place especially for the 7x57. Currently have a sako in 7x64 on order, not because it's the hottest chambering but because they're beautiful and the caliber is something uncommon around my area.

As sync said, I have a 7RM and 7RUM already, so I don't really feel the need to push my mausers to the extreme.

If you wanted a 7RM, you'd be better off buying one and leaving the 7x61 alone. Let the crazies like me pay you good money for it.

I like the rifle, I'm not in love with either caliber, I do love my Brno 22F carbine in 7x57. I think that the rifles rate up there with the Colt/Sauer rifles. I don't think I would convert one, unless I got a heck of a deal, but I wouldn't pass up one that had been converted.

People like us that love 7x57 are a special kind of weird.

Where lots of people love their 7mm-08 and would rather have the ease of purchasing those rifles and ammunition, I love backordering ammo for months at a time and searching for rare rifles that cost more than they're worth.

Only thing left for me is a custom and a second mortgage so that I can afford a rigby or westley richards.

I just missed a custom 7x57 on a Mexican Mauser by Tip Burns that was on Gunbroker a couple years ago. I didn't want to bid too early and the seller pulled the auction because there were no bids. I kicked myself for a week after that one.

Ouch. I have a 1916 Spanish mauser that was refinished at some point. Ruins the collector value but the wood is gorgeous so I might drop another action onto it and use that one for a project.

I was told that military actions take a lot of work to get right for customs though.

If I remember right; the Mexican Mausers are small ring and considered some of the best of the military Mausers.

They can't handle super high pressures, but they are very smooth and light. It's also a bonus since they were originally 7x57 meaning that you don't have to worry about lengths, etc.
