I have not hunted in 15 years, but I spent 20 years hunting before that, I was an avid hunter

Texas now requires you take a hunters ed class, but will easily allow illegals to live and work in he Texas free any rules...

Online class is a joke. Can click through then take the test and be done with it in about 20 minutes. Everything on it is common knowledge to anyone that's hunted for more than a season.

Which is the best online course to take? I figured it would be similar to online defensive driving courses. Some are good, others are terrible.

Since last year was the first year for my wife to hunt, she was exempt. She decided to not hunt this year early on, but after sitting on Saturday she's changed her mind I believe. up

I have found most new guys trying the sport are embarrassed to have to take the class. Like many things these days want prefer to do it online from the comfort of home without having to admit to buddies they had to go to the class. They show up and are all I have had my license I took the class years ago but know nothing about basic safety or principals of hunting. The ease of the online class is great to encourage funding for the state but not so great for educating a new generation of hunters who don't have the experience that a lot of us had.

I would highly recommend the class for those new to the outdoors and hunting in general. There is too much to be gained from a hands on class for those with litle knowledge or sense of the outdoors.

I'm not required to have it but in the past 40 or so years I have taken it probably 5 times (usually as part of a PE elective class). The last time was in 2004 when I took it with my son. It was a small group and it was fun. I was surprised how much it had changed. There was a lot more on conservation and stewardship of the land than there used to be.

But one question is still on the test that was there from the beginning; What is the best size shot to use for quail hunting... and every time I have taken the class the instructor gave us the answer ahead of time because it's a subjective opinion and not a definitive 'fact'.

Cant remember the site but I took it online last year. It was easy and let me skip through quickly although I did have to wait in some spots to make sure I spent enough time on it. I would say that 90+% was common sense for anyone who has hunted or handled a firearm before. It did have some neat history type questions and legal stuff that was interresting but I dont see how that can make anyone a safer hunter.... oh well. I passed and thats all that matters to me.

I've never done the on-line course, but yes the course is actually very beneficial to those who are new to firearms & hunting. My kids have two cousins, (both in high school), that I am trying to get involved in the outdoors. They are interested, but their parents not so much....I just paid for and took them to Hunter's Ed class. They had a TON of questions and enjoyed the "hands on" approach.

that's just for Texas though, right? Other states date of birth varies quite widely ... 1-1-1951 for Colorado if I remember correctly?

As far as I know that's just for Texas. I know everybody in Missouri has to have it and I think everybody in Georgia.

On or after September 2, 1971 you are required to have Hunters Ed in Texas. Most states that require a Hunters Ed class have reciprocity with other states that require it as well. So if you have it here you are good to go in most other states that require it and vice versa.

Bro-in-law just took his on-line. He said at the end of each section there was a test(turned out to be sample questions) so he went through all of the sections, taking each of the (sample) tests, then when he thought he was done....the next page said something to the effect...you are now ready to take the exam!!
