Friend of ours says the game warden told him that after the drought, most of the heavy rutting in parts of the panhandle has been happening in January after the season is over. If true that would explain the abundance of very young fawns we've been seeing.

We are going the week before Christmas and with all the rain I am expecting a good and healthy deer herd. Pitchfork part of the property we hunt borders this ranch and the 6666s. Where are you located? I know that the
races expand through several counties but one day I'd like to put a face with a name.

We are located in the southwest corner of Dickens county about 10 miles southeast of Spur. We're in the southwest corner of the Pitchfork Ranch where the Croton Creek branch of the Brazos runs through. I wish you luck with your hunt this year. up

I haven't been on THF in a while, but wanted to chime in. I hunt just outside Clarendon and was seeing a lot chasing the weekend before Thanksgiving. It was mostly young bucks, but was able to take this guy that Sunday evening. He followed a doe into the wheat field. He's my biggest to date. Gross score of 163 2/8. I had a few trail cam pics of him and I was pretty dang pumped to get a chance to harvest him!

I was planning on going up Christmas day and staying until Sunday but with the weather forecast up there I think I shoot for the last weekend.

I think your right Lotto, we are having a trickle rut this year from what I've seen.

When I was filling one of my feeders when I arrived last Friday I noticed a fresh scrape and freshened it up with some Tinks. I saw this buck late Saturday evening but wanted to get a better look at him and he was walking off and it was getting dark. He was back the next morning waiting for the doe that marked his scrape. I'd been watching this one on and off for the last few years:

great deer! good mass

Gonna be frigid up there the next week. Best of luck, stay warm and be safe.

Historic Blizzard possible late this weekend.

A developing storm system in the Desert Southwest will pull Abundant moisture north across West Texas this weekend. Sharply colder air on strong north winds will overspread the region today and will set the stage for a prolonged winter storm beginning this evening before ending early Monday morning. Blizzard conditions, periods of heavy snow and a mixture of sleet and freezing rain at times will create treacherous travel conditions and could suspend travel altogether. Motorists who choose to travel in these conditions will risk becoming stranded in Whiteout conditions with dangerous wind chills.

Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 6 PM this evening to 9 AM CST Monday.

Timing: A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will develop this evening before transitioning to heavy snow tonight and early Sunday over much of the Caprock, with a transition to all snow in the Rolling Plains expected later in the day on Sunday. Blizzard conditions will spread east on Sunday before diminishing from west to east early Monday morning.
Winds and visibility, Northerly winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts near 60 mph. Visibility from falling and blowing snow will likely be zero at times.
Snow totals, widespread amounts of 6 to 14 inches on the Caprock, with 4 to 10 inches in the Rolling Plains. Some areas could see much higher amounts. Snow drifts up to 10 feet are possible.
Ice accumulations: Up to a quarter inch of sleet and ice are possible across the southern South plains and rolling plains.
Coldest wind chills, from -5 to 10 above zero.
Impacts: People with travel plans on Sunday or Monday are strongly encouraged to cancel them altogether. Power outages are possible due to extended periods of strong winds and potentially damaging wind gusts. Rural residents should have a sufficient supply of food reserves as they could become isolated for several days. Plan a means to keep warm without commercial utilities.
Recommended actions
A Blizzard Warning means extremely low visibilities from falling snow and strong winds are likely. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you and ensure your fuel tanks are full. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.

Our cousin in Wellington told us to delay our trip. Instead of leaving tomorrow we will leave out Monday. Hopefully it will have cleared out.

We're planning to go up Thursday and stay until the 3rd. Our problem then will be dealing with the red clay mud after the snow and ice melts. Lease gate is over 3 miles from the nearest paved road, should be fun!
