Looking at the Leupold scopes and the VX-R is on sale for a pretty good price. Is this too much? It says its for long range shots. Any recommendations on other Leupolds?

Which model? There are several different sizes, magnification, reticles, and turrets. It looks like the 4x-12x is the biggest they go. My 10 yr old son has a Luepold 3-9 on his Tikka 223, and he's shot it out 400 yards. If the turrets are exposed, be careful they don't turn by rubbing on them or such, and dialing the turret when you don't want to.

I am a big fan of those Leupolds. I wouldn't mind putting one my 45-70 lever gun now the iron sights keep rattling loose.
