Big thanks to the guys on here that take the time to write out suggestions and techniques. We all know who you are and so do you guys so thanks. I can tell I am getting better. 100 yards 15-25 mph winds high humidity Perfecta 150 gr and amer Eagle 55gr soft point these are 6 inch plates : top is my AR with 3X magn and bottom is 30-06 hunting rifle I had one flyer on the 30 and I knew it when I shot it so I am definitely improving. the 3 center shots are about 1.25 inches apart so I am ecstatic. On these I have no questions. I just need to keep repeating this and practicing but I finally feel I am ready for hunting with confidence and in my abilities to make an ethical shot However my AR with the 3X mag wasnt quite as good. It isnt the rifle. The rifle is DOBA (dead on balls accurate) and it has a Geissele trigger. So rifle is no excuse at all. My red dot is an Aimpoint Micro and with a 3X on it the dot grows and it is more of a line. So not sure how to adjust to this. really looking for some pointers on how to get that 100 yard shot placement a little tighter. Not sure what I am doing wrong since the AR is easier to shoot with no recoil whatsoever. Thanks Bigfoot

On the Aimpoint with 3x magnifier, if the Aimpoint is a 4 moa dot, then the 3x magnifier will make it a 12 moa dot (covers about 12" at 100). If it's the 2 moa dot, then its about a 6 moa dot. This will cover a lot of real estate on the target. The Aimpoints are good for quick target acquisition and sending a round quickly. When you add the magnifier, it can easily complicate things with parallax issues, distorting the image, and covering up the target. They are not known for precise shooting in this manner. If you want to tighten up your groups, you may need to not use the 3x magnifier, or go to a different optic (like a 1-4 power scope). I like the 1-4 powder scopes for an AR, since I like the 1x for close in and 4x for longer range shooting. If you spent some time with a good 1-4 power scope, you can easily be good to 400-500 yards.

This ^^^^ That's not a terrible group considering the optics for the AR. A 1-4 would be my choice, and what I'm running on my AR. It's still a red dot design, but with 4x magnification makes it much easier to achieve tighter groups. That being said, I'm inly able to keep a 2-3 inch group at 100yds. I blame the awful trigger for that

I don't believe the dot grows with magnification. The dot should remain the same size relative to the target. It only appears to grow since everything is magnified including the target. It's the same as a ffp scope. The crosshairs always cover the same amount of the target but appear to grow due to magnification. http://www.vortexoptics.com/video/first_vs_second_focal_plane watch the ffp scope's crosshairs cover the same amount of the target as the magnification is adjusted.

it is a 2moa. My busy season is quickly coming to an end so no major purchases for me this hunting season. I am hoping to stick with this set up for the next few years and improve on my skills with it. I do a lot of stalking for pigs so I will use just the red dot alone because it is extremely accurate to 50/75 yards with super quick acquisition. I got the 3X for times that I may be in a stand hunting pigs taking a longer shot.
it does remain the same relative to the target but wih no mag it appears as a dot and the 3X makes it bigger and more of a line instead of a dot. I assume I need to try to pick out a small portion of the red dot/line and try to use it to be more precise but I am not sure how or if that dot/line changes on me depending on parallax etc

also what affect if any does humidity play? Nothing to worry about as far as external ballistics. I always set it a 50% no matter what it really is and roll on. Temp and density altitude are what matter, but not at 100 yards.

Especially what trigger... ... in my experience some ar's just aren't shooters...

Its made by Blackheart which is a company that sells most of their stuff to military and overseas operators. Their website is down for construction so I couldnt send you a link. Most likely you will have never heard of them since they are not too interested in selling to the public. I dont remember the exact trigger. It has a heavy black nitride 16 in barrel with surefire muzzle break nickel boron bolt carrier group etc. I didnt build it and it is not a franken gun. This is their std carbine rifle and I have not made any changes since it is top of the line already.

What brand is the magnifier? A good one shouldn't distort the dot. I would look at it as possibly being the problem.

I'd ditch the tripler and see what it shoots at 50-75 with just the dot. MOPP (pie plate) is not going to cut it. Might also try some different ammunition?

shoots great at 50 yards with or without tripler.
AT 50 yards I am very good and the accuracy with or without the tripler is excellent.
I just need practice. I was hoping for some miracle tip that will make me put it in the same bullet hole every time.
I am on my way to the range again today!! I love it!

50 is too easy and too close Very tight at 50 I quit doing 50 because it isnt challenging I can see myself getting better by the day. I was watching other people at the range today and man did they suck!!!! I thought I was bad but not anymore. I am finally seeing the light. today I really worked on follow thru which is probably the best tip I have gotten so far off this board. 1st pic is Hog hammer 168 grain and Amer Eagle 55 gr up top 2nd pic is Fed Prem 150 gr soft and same up top much better grouping today but I think my red dot has shifted a little on me. I will need to correct that at the range next time

Now we need to address calling the shot.
Calling the shot is the last fraction of a second when the rifle fired, where was the reticle? If you are holding still, exhale, slow steady trigger pressure, you call the shot that was perfectly placed, follow through on the trigger, but the rifle is still grouping poorly, then it is not shooter error. It is ammo, rifle/ scope error. Those groups are very large, and I am not saying that being rude. I am wondering if you are now not the problem. Is that the best the rifle system and ammo can do? One way to check is to have a friend that is a known good shooter shoot your rifle. If he can't make it shoot any better, then you habe found the limits of rifle and ammo. Tweaks can be made to both, if needed.

From what it sounds like, you might have an astigmatism if your dot becomes anything other than a dot.
As far as magnification, it was covered earlier in a response to Chad's explanation--from my understanding, the dot AND target will be magnified, so the dot should remain 2 moa in relation to the target. It would not be as Chad explained it.
