As to what kind of wood this is. I know but I've never heard of it being used for scales but I'll see how it turns out after being stabilized and filled.

I've got some chunks of spalted elm that look like that; but it's really hard to tell unless you can smell it, feel it, and study it real closely with an adult beverage sitting beside you at the work bench.
