Does anyone have any experience with this caliber? I am getting one passed down from a family member and was just curious about it. What caliber is it similar too? What game would be suitable for these rifle? Does it perform well in the field? Plan to take it out this season if it is in good shape.

Very similar to a 308 Winchester.

Piece of junk, send me pics and I can maybe take it off your hands!
Because, that's what friends do. No, that is a very good deer/hog round.
30 cal. good ballistics, slower that the 308, less pressure, good round.
I have one in a Savage 99, does the job well.

Those 99s are pretty hard to find and a real neat gun. Worth a decent amount if they're in good shape though I don't think I'd ever be able to sell it.

I have a Rem81 in the caliber. A little less flat and a little less energy than the 308. Still rather effective.

Great for hogs and deer. Buddy of mine had a Remington pump in .300 Savage and killed quite a few deer with it. Like the other posted, kind of a .308 Lite.

I have a Model 99 in .300 Savage. Excellent general purpose deer/hog round, especially if you handload.

The down side is limited ammo selection off the shelf. Core lokt is all I ever see, which works just fine for me. Don't know what's available on-line.

Midway has Hornady, Remington and Doubletap available. Before I retired my 99 Hornady did not make a load and I don't think Doubletap existed.

I've got a 99 in 300 Savage. Had an old scope on it, but took it off. It feels right in the hand without a scope.

Funny it is compared so much to the .308. Anyone else get the irony here? Great round, killed deer for many years and still has a following. Good luck with it. Be safe and shoot straight!

I think a better comparison would be, that the 300 Savage is to the 308, what the 7x57 Mauser is to the 7mm-08.

except backwards. I believe with modern componets and rifles the 7x57 with a slightly larger case capacity will out perform the 7mm08 while the 308 will outperform the 300 savage.

I was thinking of in factory loadings, you can also rod rod the Savage to a degree in a bolt action, just not as much. Both cartridges are loaded below their potential due to older weaker rifles being available.
