Well I finally finished building my first AR. It has a varmint contour SS 1-8 twist 5.56 barrel on it. I built this rifle for shooting steel and predators/varmints. Should I just load up 55gr bullets or try and shoot some heavier bullets for better long range performance? I'd love to try the 75gr amax but worry Either the 1-8 isn't enough or that they'd be too long for the magazine? I'm open to any recommendations. Thanks.

How long is the barrel? I think 1-8 can do 75 amax but you have to test. I would only shoot 55s if you want to save money. Otherwise 69smk 77smk or 75amax

In the past have loaded and shot 75gr V-Max in an AR with a 1:8 twist, they did fine except needed to load them a little long or the ogive would be in the case mouth. Loaded a little longer just to where they would work in the steel mags worked though. They were too long for a Pmag since the steel is thinner than the plastic could get away with a little longer COL. But they stabilized.

Also have a 22-243 with a 1:8 27 inch Hart barrel that have loaded down to velocities obtainable with the 223 and it stabilized the 75 V-Max and Nosler 80gr Custom Competition bullets at the reduced velocities.

Remember with a 1:7 twist a 223 can stabilize the 1.25 inch long 90gr Berger VLD bullets. For the Berger 75gr VLD they list optimal twist as 1:7.9 and min twist as 1:9

The 75 A-max will stabilize fine out of an 8" twist. Like stated, the 75 A-max will seat deep into the case. I'd recommend the 75 BTHP. This bullet is near identical to the A-max, but has the shorter ogive to tip length, which will allow the bullet to seat further out in the case and still have a 2.250" COAL.

Thanks guys. What velocities should I expect with the 69-75gr bullets?

My AR that has the 1:8 twist barrel shoots 75 grain BTHP's like a dream. I load them short enough to just barely clear the magazine. I've found AR Comp to work best for this bullet with my setup.

What's the powder of choice for the 175 BTHP?

for the 75gr pills I like Varget or CFE223. Really like the CFE for the Swift Siroccos since it helps get rid if the fouling of the pure copper jacket.

AR Comp, 8208 XBR, or CFE 223.
