would you consider this a management buck? I grew up hunting public land in PA, mostly archery so took what I could get. On a TX lease now, Im allowed one management buck and one trophy with trophy fee. Owner wasnt too specific. Just said 3.5y/o and older with a small rack is considered management.

Depends on how strict of a management plan y'all are trying to run. He's a young buck, I'm not sure he's 3.5 based on that pic, so on my place he walks. He's only an 8 point and might have those crab claws the rest of his life so other guys might cull him. I don't mind crab claws and big 8 points.

On most places, I would say no, he is too young. On some highly managed places, possibly.

this is the best pic. Lease is in Willacy County. From what I read, antler restrictions only apply to 13 counties. From the pics ive seen, lots of crab claws on the bucks taken here. Which is fine by me.

If he's 2.5, I'd let him walk (depending on the herd). If he's 3.5, he's a cull buck. Best to show the photo to the landowner and ask for his opinion.

Which is fine by me. Antler restrictions apply to a lot more than 13 counties. Look up your county's restrictions on tpwd's website or in the outdoor annual. You need to look this up before you go hunting. Good luck this season!

Thats a decent deer for willacy county, i wouldnt be surprised if they considered that buck a trophy on your lease. Willacy county has a bad genetics in most of the area unless your further north passed raymondville

Just had a chance to look at this pic in higher resolution. The deer's 3 1/2, all day. He's a cull or "management" buck, IMO. You should still seek landowner's permission, first.

What are your management goals? On my place, we try to get as many bucks to maturity as we can. Unless you're tightly managed, look for reasons not to shoot immature bucks. You certainly aren't going to mount that type of deer so a doe will do the same in the freezer.

Willacy is not an AR county so he's legal for sure. I thought 3.5 too based on belly and legs. Asking the landowner is the best advise this thread offers.

No need to shoot that deer at all. He is most likely a 2 year old.

He is weak for his age. I see a small bodied 3 yr old and he would still be weak for a 2 yr old. If you can find an older buck to fit the criteria I would.

Nope. Looks like a 2.5yo maybeeee 3.5yo 8 pt to me. Unless you are hunting a ranch that is pretty far down the management track that guy would walk.
