Before someone jumps on me and says "22-250 ain't somethin' to be shootin' deer with" I already do, so get over it. Sorry. Wondering if I should use 55gr VMAXs or generic Soft Points for mule doe neck with a boiler room possibility, depending on distance. I've had good results with VMAX, but am worried that the rapid fragmentation won't do me any good in the case of a behind-the-shoulder-shot. With neck I know I should be good. With a soft point, I know I'm good either way. But, I like VMAXs more. Now I make no sense. My real question is, can I shoot a deer in the boiler room with the VMAX and have a good shot and recovering it? Or rather, should I shoot the boiler room with VMAX? I know my disclaimer will not have any effect, so please, refrain from wad-i-fying your panties at the fact that I shoot a 22-250 at more than a gnat. I know gnats are hard enough to kill with a rifle as is, but I've had great luck with mine. Sorry for the wad, but don't post it. Thanks for any help!

I like the soft pts better for deer. Even though that ain't enough gun. Just kidding. Was using mine today after axis. Plenty of gun if you can shoot.

You talking factory ammo?
SP's either way. Some people call them V-splashes b/c they are pretty explosive, especially at high velocity.
I'm running 65 sierra GK SPBT's in 22-250 this year, so far I've just shot one 200# boar at 200yds, dropped him where he stood, high shoulder shot.

Link Have killed quite a few deer with the 22-250, the link above is about as good a combination as it gets for deer with it IMO. Not cheap but works very well. Of the 2 bullets mentioned in the OP the softpoint and after using them for numerous deer do not really like them.

Haven't shot any deer but thumped plenty of hogs with 55 V Max out of my Swifts. Some of the big hogs took one shot behind the shoulder in the sweet spot. One boar was over 300. Not my preferred pig gun but was what I had at the time. Then again I've killed mule deer does with a 222 50gr SP. shot placement

I like the soft pts better for deer. Even though that ain't enough gun. Just kidding. Was using mine today after axis. Plenty of gun if you can shoot. Shot an HUGE axis doe with the VMAX. 180-200yd shoulder shot. Lungs were jelly. No blood trail, but she died a short distance away and we found her. Of the 2 bullets mentioned in the OP the softpoint and after using them for numerous deer do not really like them. So, you recommend the SP but don't like it? I'm kind of confused, sorry. Then again I've killed mule deer does with a 222 50gr SP. shot placement I've shot everything from a cottontail to nilgai and oryx with this same gun. Used 64gr power points on said three, all deer I've taken have been with various 55s, SP, BTHP (sierra), VMAX, Silvertip, Nosler BT. One day I will have the 60gr Nosler Partitions in my ammo box. Not for a little mule doe hunt though. I think it's safe to say that I'm gonna go with my gut and shoot the VMAXs. I like neck shots the most anyway. Thank you all so much! Have a great night.

I shoot v-max's and game kings in mine.
But now that your in high school you really should get s bigger gun, a .22-250'is not a do-all
A aoudad will laugh that off

I would say Hornady SP or the Sierra GK which is the BTHP which is a tough bullet would overall perform better. Vmax can give some splash wounds now and then when they hit at bad angles. These are splash's on Bobcats with 22 cal Vmax

Lots of folks have used the 64 grain Winchster Power Point with great results. Leave the varmint bullets for varmints. Look to be in stock at Midway. Decent price too. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/961618/...point-box-of-20

I like the VMax and have killed quite a few deer with it. My .22-250 is a Ruger #1 and 1 shot is all I need. On the other extreme is my Marlin 1895 .45-70. I like the recoil of the .22-250 WAAAAY better!

I can tell you from experience that a 52 grain Berger is not the answer for deer. But a 55 Gameking with 36.0 grains of Varget will hammer hogs so should be more than adequate on a deer.

I really like the 45gr tsx over a max load of RL-15 in my 22-250. It's dropped everything I've shot with it. I don't care for the vmax on bigger animals. I've had problems with them. Out of your two choices I'd go with the soft point.
